Many community gardens seek to increase fresh food access in their neighborhoods by growing crops to share with community members for free, or donating produce to local food pantries. How can we make the most of our efforts to grow healthy, productive crops for donation?

We are excited to be honoring some of our community’s most dedicated growers and fresh food lovers at this year's Garden Get Down. We are excited to honor the Gardens of Millvale as our Resilent Community Growers!
As a project of the non-profit Millvale Community Development Corporation since 2010, the Gardens of Millvale strives to create a food independent community through education, preservation, and sustainability. Since Grow Pittsburgh last held our Garden Get Down in Millvale in 2019, the gardeners have epitomized resiliency in expanding food production and deepening community impact through challenging times.
Today, the Gardens of Millvale spans 11 lots, and includes a full orchard lot, a hoop house, pollinator habitats, more than 45 raised beds. They’ve also improved their food distribution and created a paid staff position. Maya Little has been the dedicated garden manager in Millvale since 2020.

We are excited to be growing a selection of native plants in collaboration with Bird Lab! We will be doing a pop-up at Shiloh Farmstand tomorrow (Thurs. 7/25) from 2:30-6:30pm. (7209 Thomas Blvd, Pittsburgh, Pa 15208)
Bird Lab creates and implements bird-focused conservation practices. They do research, education, and community science to help create healthy ecosystems. Nick, the executive director, collected seeds at his conservation projects last year, winter sowed the seeds, and then we up-potted them at the Garden Dreams greenhouse. We are thrilled to have this partnership to be able to increase the number of native plants in our offerings.
Did you know you can harvest tomatoes before they’re ripe? Despite “vine-ripened” being used in advertising, researchers have found there is no taste difference in tomatoes that were harvested when fully ripe versus those harvested when they first started to blush. In fact, harvesting them early can prolong their shelf life and make them less of a target for pests like squirrels and groundhogs. At Shiloh, we harvest our tomatoes when they have about 50% color. This is especially useful for high sugar tomatoes like these delicious sungolds which are prone to cracking when left on the vine too long.
We are excited to be honoring some of our community’s most dedicated growers and fresh food lovers at this years Garden Get Down.
This year’s “School Garden Hero” is William Cary Allen! Cary has been a teacher at the Pittsburgh Public Schools for 32 years and retired earlier this year after teaching at Lincoln Elementary for 10 years. We are excited to honor him at the Garden Get Down in recognition of his decades-long commitment to fostering a love for nature, sustainability, and learning through the school garden.
“He kept worms for composting, other animals for observing and loving, plants growing in the windows and outside in the garden, tactile building supplies in the other spaces. Walking into his educational spaces, both indoors and out, makes you feel curious and excited, the way school is supposed to make you feel.”
