Crisis Center North was so glad to be a part of the Inspired Women North Chapter Garden Party event this year! We are always honored to be a part of the collective giving model to affect change. Congratulations to Shelterbox, an international disaster shelter relief charity that was awarded $7000 by the combined funds of members of the North Chapter and event attendees. Special thanks to the Krischke family for opening their beautiful home and creating such a memorable evening for all!

Today marks the anniversary of the passing of one of the heroes of Crisis Center North. Penny became a trailblazer for CCN's PAWS for Empowerment program and paved the way for so many animal-centric programs in the area and beyond.

Penny was a Border Collie/Spaniel mix who was rescued by CCN President and CEO, Grace Coleman from a shelter in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. In 2011, Penny was at work with Grace and a little boy was afraid to attend his therapy session. Penny comforted him and Grace suggested that Penny could accompany him in his therapy session to help him feel more at-ease. He shared more that day than he had in any of his previous sessions, and the PAWS for Empowerment program was born.

In addition to therapy, Penny began comforting Survivors of domestic violence in the Allegheny County court system in 2013, making her the first shelter dog in Pennsylvania to provide court services to victims. She allowed Survivors to tell their stories, many times within mere feet of their abusers. She had amazing protective instincts; she could tell if there was a gun in the court and would bump her handler to let her know. Her intuitive behavior set the bar high for those who followed her.

Since 2011, the PAWS program has grown to employ multiple animals, and serves as an example for shelters to utilize dogs in similar ways across the country. It also provides pet-centric services to Survivors, including veterinary funds, tangible items, relocation assistance, and education about the significant connection between pet violence and family violence.

Penny passed away on June 26th of 2023, but her legacy lives on in every person that has been helped by the PAWS program. Her comforting demeanor and unwavering work ethic showed the potential of what shelter dogs are capable of, and we celebrate her life and achievements by honoring her on this day.

We love you, Penny; we will never forget you.

We regret to inform our friends of the passing of CCN's Leon Strimel.

Leon was the head of our Prevention Education program, reaching over 15,000 students a year in Allegheny County schools.

Countless lives were touched by Leon, and his positivity and community-based philosophy left an indelible mark on so many of our community youths. Breaking the cycle of violence begins with education, and Leon was an essential part of these efforts. His legacy will live on through the lives that he has changed for the better.

Friends and family are welcome from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 4, in Salandra Funeral and Cremation Services, Inc., 304 West Pike Street, Canonsburg, 724-745-8120, where departing prayers will be recited at 9:35 a.m. Wednesday, June 5. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. in St. Oscar Romero Parish at St. Patrick Church Patrick Church, 317 West Pike Street, Canonsburg.
