Happy Founder's Day to our Homewood-Brushton YMCA community!
Happy Founder's Day to our YMCA community! On June 6, 1844, the first YMCA was formed in London, England. Today marks the 180th anniversary of the YMCA movement that has spurred the creation of over 12,000 YMCA locations in 119 countries.
The first YMCA in Pittsburgh was constructed on Centre Avenue in the Hill District in 1922, closely followed by the construction of the Allegheny YMCA on the North Side in 1927. Today, there are nearly 20 YMCA locations in the Pittsburgh area that continue to serve the region. The YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh is committed to strengthening local communities and creating an environment where our next generations can flourish well into the future.
To our community- THANK YOU for making the YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh a part of your lives. With your help, we are making the world a better place for all.

June is Pride month- why do we celebrate? Pride Month is known worldwide as a time to celebrate and uplift LGBTQ+ identifying people and communities. The Stonewall Riots, which began on June 28, 1969, at the Stonewall Inn in New York City, mark a pivotal moment in LGBTQ+ history and the beginning of Pride. Sparked by a police raid on the popular gay bar, the riots saw the LGBTQ+ community fighting back against systemic harassment and discrimination. This act of resistance galvanized the modern gay rights movement, leading to the formation of activist groups and the first Pride marches. Today, the Stonewall Riots are celebrated as a symbol of courage, unity, and the ongoing struggle for equality and human rights.
