Pittsburgh’s José-Alain Sahel honored with Wolf Prize for groundbreaking research on sight restoration The Wolf Prize, conferred in Israel, is considered one of the world’s most prestigious recognitions for scientific and artistic achievements.
Today, the U.S. News and World Report released its 2024-2025 Best Hospitals rankings. Of the specialties, Ear, Nose, and Throat was previously ranked 44 and is now ranked 19 – a significant jump. “I’m sure a lot of people with dry eye disease hear about omega 3s and fish oils, but I truly believe having an anti-inflammatory diet is really important” for prevention, says Dr. Sabrina Mukhtar, the director of the Dry Eye Center of Excellence at UPMC Vision Institute and assistant professor of cornea and refractive surgery in the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.

"Professors Botond Roska and José-Alain Sahel are awarded the Wolf Prize for collectively pioneering a novel vision restoration approach by designing and applying optogenetic technology to render surviving neurons in the eye light-sensitive, functionally replacing photoreceptors lost to damage and genetic disease," the Wolf Foundation said.

A new Hearing and Vision Sciences Graduate Certificate Program is now accepting applications from graduate students who are working on hearing- and vision-related research. This is a one-year program that aims to train the next generation of hearing and vision scientists in basic and translational research. The program offers coursework and opportunities for collaborative research and mentorship with basic and translational hearing and vision researchers.
The program will support five one-year fellowships for graduate students. It is also open to students who will not receive a stipend. The application deadline is July 1, 2024. To apply, please email Holly Hill, graduate program administrator, at [email protected] one PDF file that includes:
1. a cover letter;
2. research statement including justification for participation in the certificate program (1-2 pages);
3. CV; and
4. two letters of support (one of them from a mentor).
