Did you know, those little bees you see in the evening sat on flowers are old bees.

Old & sick bees don't return to the hive at the end of their day.

They spend the night on flowers, and if they have the chance to see another sunrise, they resume their activity by bringing pollen or nectar to the colony.

They do this sensing that the end is near.

No bee waits to die in the hive so as not to burden the others.

So, next time you see an old little bee sat upon a flower as the night closes in...
..thank the little bee for their life long service.

How much honey? This much honey…

Pittsburgh Honey Cooperative Pittsburgh Honey Hot Rod Honey Abeille Beauté Squirrel Hill Market

How much honey does a hive have?🍯Count the honey supers!

During the honeyflow, beekeepers may add shallow boxes called “supers” to the tops of their beehives! These boxes of empty frames/comb give the bees room to expand their honey collection.

In really good seasons, a beehive may be stacked with honey supers over 6ft tall! In poor conditions, the bees may struggle to fill up more than one or two.

Every beekeeper hopes to add a lot of supers to their hives, but it doesn’t always work out. Weather conditions, availability of forage, pesticide use, the health of the bees, etc. all impact the honey crop.

Seen any tall beehives this season? They’re likely being filled up with honey!

This is what we do.

Pittsburgh Honey Cooperative Pittsburgh Honey Hot Rod Honey Abeille Beauté Squirrel Hill Market

🍓The reasons Triple B has berries‼️

1. We start in the fall with feeding and consistent irrigation, which all help the plants set fruit for spring.
2. We monitor carefully all winter, and early Spring. This Spring, we were managing frost protection for many nights, to avoid losing too many buds.
3. Weeks ago, the fruit was being set, and we focused on active irrigation, long before the dry spell was upon us.

We have used half the water in 3 of our irrigation ponds, and we fully expect to purchase water from the water authority to fill the ponds to continue irrigating all summer. When Mother Nature comes up short, we have to subsidize her efforts.

Triple B is dedicated to producing the best produce for you this summer. Bear with us for timing, ripening, and all the other details… agriculture and growing healthy safe food for all of you, is what we do. Generation after generation.. this is our life’s work. Thank you for supporting us!

Did you know?🧐 Honey bees need water too!💦

In the summer heat, having access to water is important for bees! They use it to regulate the temperature in the hive through evaporation and in feeding larvae.

Some research suggests bees may even get nutrients from water containing salt and other minerals.

You can create a honey bee watering station by providing a shallow pool or fountain with sticks, rocks, or sponges for the bees to stand on while they collect water!

One of these is not like the other!🐝

Yellow jackets are a type of wasp that, based on appearance, could be confused with a honey bee.

Yellow jackets are predatory insects. They hunt, eat, and scavenge other bugs. They are incredibly aggressive and will often sting unprovoked.

And they don’t just sting, they bite and then sting repeatedly. In short, they’re real mean.

Honey bees can become aggressive if provoked, but will generally go about their business without bothering you. They do not bite and can only sting once.

Honey bees aren’t as brightly colored as yellow jackets and have fuzzy bodies. Yellow jackets build nests in the ground or enclosed spaces. You’ll likely see a honey bee foraging among flowers, but you won’t see yellow jackets stopping to smell the roses.

Hopefully, you encounter more friends than foes!
