The Awesome Spirit of Wildlife, Inc. (TASOW)

A non-profit 501(c)(3) focused on conservation, education, and exotic reptile rescue & rehab. See how you can help us get to that point!

The Awesome Spirit of Wildlife (TASOW) was founded in June 2004 by a small group of students from Slippery Rock High School, in Western Pennsylvania. Originally, TASOW was a small club of individuals who met after school to do short films on native, Pennsylvanian Reptiles and Amphibians along with educational programs on the subject for our fellow classmates. The group eventually expanded outward

About The Awesome Spirit Of Wildlife 🐢
"The Awesome Spirit of Wildlife, Inc. (TASOW) is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization with a mission to help communities create a sustainable future for all living things, through education, biodiversity preservation, and creating a culture of appreciation for the natural world. We strive to be a voice for the misunderstood and underrepresented creatures of the world. Lack of knowledge about reptiles and other exotics has led to widespread irresponsible practices with breeding, pet dealing, and pet ownership. This results in a large number of animals being neglected and abused and contributes to the decline of these species in their native habitats. Our educational programs aim to teach the importance of conservation, proper husbandry, and shed light on the problems caused by the mistreatment of living things.

We provide rescue, rehabilitation, and rehoming services for exotic reptiles in both the greater Chattanooga, TN and Pittsburgh, PA areas. Through our rescue network, we not only help the animals affected by these problems, but also use their stories to help teach others why responsible ownership is important to the health and happiness of these truly amazing creatures. TASOW does not breed or sell exotic reptiles. All the individuals that reside with us and come through our rescue have been surrendered due to one reason or another with the ultimate goal of finding the perfect forever home for each individual animal."

Leadership is essential to the core of any organization and we are proud to announce some positive new changes happening to TASOW this year! Our Board of Directors recently met to elect members into new positions. Meet our new Vice President, Malachia and Interim Treasurer, Luis .

Malachia has been involved with TASOW since adopting one of our rescue corn snakes back in 2016 and has been an integral part of our team ever since. Malachia is also a Bat Biologist and has a passion for all critters, both large and small. Her experience with field work, running programs, and organizing operations are extremely valued. We’re grateful to have her.

Luis also got his start with TASOW, volunteering in events and meetings in 2016. He has been a powerful voice in our leadership when advising on matters of marketing, business, and finance. Luis’s background in running his own company, sitting as treasurer on a business networking board, and taking up the role of former Vice President of our own organization make him a great candidate for the interim. He is definitely a valued member of our Board and we appreciate his input and dedication!

Things will continue to evolve this year as we continue to grow. More announcements will be coming soon, including an update on rescue operations in both states and upcoming events and programs. Stay tuned!

Long before we became an official 501c3, the idea of TASOW was in no small part conceived with the help of our co-founder, Joe McChesney.

Joe was a passionate individual who had a love for the outdoors and the environment, and who’s knack for public speaking helped create the foundation for our education programs.

Sadly, Joe was taken too early from us when he passed away on this day in 2007 at the age of 18.

We continue our mission in his memory and in the hopes sharing his passion, our passion, with local communities.

If you’d like to help support our cause, please visit our website in the pages bio and head on over to our donate page to see how you can help us make difference in the lives of both animals and people alike.
