Nine year old child riding bike killed by driver in Homewood - August 18, 2024 - BikePGH 08/21/2024

Two days after a driver killed 9-year-old Courtney Carter near her home in Homewood, a driver killed 11-year-old Roxanne Alexis Bonnoni in front of her home in Natrona.

Both Pittsburgh area crashes are tragically similar.

This all serves as a reminder as to why the City of Pittsburgh and all of Allegheny County must generously fund safe streets infrastructure, so that there are resources to fulfill the countless traffic calming requests submitted by residents each year.

Traffic calming save lives.

Nine year old child riding bike killed by driver in Homewood - August 18, 2024 - BikePGH In the past week, drivers killed two children in the Pittsburgh region. Courtney Carter, 9, and Roxanne Alexis Bonnoni, 11.

Child struck, killed by vehicle in Harrison Township 08/21/2024

For the second time this week a driver killed a child in a residential neighborhood in our Pittsburgh region:

Yesterday 8/20/24, a driver hit Roxanne Alexis Bonnoni, 11, of Natrona in Harrison Twp in front of her home. Our hearts go out to the family as they deal with this gut-wrenching tragedy.

WTAE-TV Pittsburgh reports that neighbors have expressed concern about speeding drivers in the area: "Something needs to change around here, for the better. It's sad to see young people getting taken away from us."

Child struck, killed by vehicle in Harrison Township The incident happened around 7:20 p.m. Tuesday along K***z Street.

Today's "Victory Lap” is much deserved, and so many people worked tirelessly to make these infrastructure upgrades a reality.

We also need to acknowledge that there's MUCH more work to be done. Drivers are still killing people and KIDS in Pittsburgh and beyond.

This devastating loss of life and impact to families is why we will continue to push for safety on our streets. Thank you for your commitment to Vision Zero, Mayor Ed Gainey

“It is with profound sadness that I send my heartfelt condolences to the family of Courtney Carter, the young child killed in a vehicular collision while riding her bicycle on Sunday. Even one fatal traffic crash is too many, and we know that there is still work to be done to reach our goal of zero traffic fatalities and serious injuries. Our Collision Investigation Unit is actively working to investigate this incident in real-time. Once the investigation is complete, our Vision Zero Fatal Crash Response Team will complete a site visit to determine what improvements can be made to ensure that this never happens again. May each of us honor Courtney’s memory by recommitting ourselves to solutions that keep everyone safe. Sending prayers of peace and comfort to all those who knew and love her.”

We are deeply saddened to hear that a driver killed *9 year old girl, Courtney Carter, in Homewood yesterday. Everyone deserves safe streets, especially in front of their home.

The devastating loss of life and impact to families is why we fought for the city to adopt Vision Zero, why Mayor Gainey has committed to eliminating traffic fatalities, and why we will all continue to push for safety on our streets.

We’re still learning details of what happened, and we’ll be sure to provide updates as information comes out.

Just after 5:30 p.m., Pittsburgh Police, Fire, and EMS were dispatched to Rosedale Street near Tacoma Street in Homewood South for reports of a child who had been riding her bike and was struck by a vehicle.

Responders arrived to find a 9-year-old female victim in the roadway with traumatic injuries. She was transported by Pittsburgh EMS to Children’s Hospital in critical condition. A short time later, she was pronounced deceased at the hospital.

The adult female driver stayed at the scene and was cooperative with officers.

Collision Investigation Unit detectives were called to investigate. The investigation is ongoing.

The character of streets changes when traffic patterns change - Penn Circle isn't a trash can, it's an important neighborhood connection! Safe infrastructure we can slow down and enjoy.

Last week, we picked up the trash.. now let's keep it clean! Huge thanks to everyone who came out to help.

Today's a great day for safety and mobility at Penn Circle in East Liberty 🎊

We attended the Penn Circle Two Way Conversion ribbon cutting with Pittsburgh Mobility and Infrastructure
City of Pittsburgh
Mayor Ed Gainey
Urban Redevelopment Authority of Pittsburgh
East Liberty

Completed earlier this summer, this crucial infrastructure project has created safer neighborhood connections in and around East Liberty. Now, instead of being built like a highway, Penn Circle is built like the residential area it is, and prioritizing peoples' safety and accessibility.

Residents deserve safe connections between neighborhoods, and this project shows we can work together and do it.

With 4000 ft of safer roadway, "This project is a shining example of what a project can look like in PGH." - Mike Maloch, Pittsburgh Mobility and Infrastructure. This exciting project can really serve as a model for the rest of the city.

Today we are really feeling the sense of community that safer connected infrastructure fosters. Let's all slow down, enjoy it, and make it happen in more places across Pittsburgh!
