The Charlotte Local Education Foundation works with the statewide program, Take Stock in Children, which provides scholarships and mentoring to more than 18,000 young people. The program identifies low income students in middle school who have the potential to go to college. If the students keep good grades, remain drug and crime free during the program, a college tuition scholarship is awarded. S

After Hurricane Ian, many families were faced with housing insecurity. The number of students identified as homeless in Charlotte County doubled. The Charlotte Local Education Foundation worked with the district mental health coordinator and homeless liaison to assist these students. The idea to assemble and distribute duffle bags filled with supplies to the students in need was born. Resiliency Through the Community funds were utilized to purchase materials and supplies. Volunteers were recruited, using community service as a tool to build resiliency.
The duffle bag project was an opportunity for students to help their peers while new partnerships were developed. Charlotte County Take Stock In Children (TSIC) participants did the duffle bag stuffing as well as other tasks to ensure success. The experience also provided the students an opportunity to demonstrate empathy and identify the benefits of volunteering in a hands-on manner rather than through a workshop or presentation.
Assembly day was an incredible experience that Charlotte County TSIC kids, partners, district staff, and community members are still talking about. They used teams, assembly lines, and some informal racing - Spirit week all in one day! Students received service hours, and they had the chance to give back.
The project turned out to be a wonderful success and so much fun! Working with student and community volunteers, the Charlotte Education Foundation team had an amazing day and created over 750 backpacks filled with hygiene items, school supplies, and a small plush blanket!

Non Profit of the Year
CLEF - History & Mission
Founded in 1989, the Charlotte Local Education Foundation (CLEF) is a non-profit, 501 (c)(3) organization that brings our community together for the investment of advancing student learning and teacher leading. By increasing public awareness and inspiring community and business support for programs focused on learning, literacy, and leadership, CLEF continues to be a community catalyst and convener around innovation in student learning.
CLEF works in partnership with the community and businesses to bring critical resources that are not funded by normal tax revenues to help students succeed in their academic and personal achievements. These needs are met through student scholarships, mentoring and dropout prevention strategies, free school supplies for low-income students, teacher quality and recognition programs, classroom grants, literacy improvement strategies, technical/career education initiatives, and targeted support for low-performing students and schools.
