Tonight is that last night of Architalx 2024. Looking forward to this evening’s unique hybrid lecture with
Lindsey Wikstrom / Mattaforma  / as she joins us remotely. Matthew Tonello of Consigli Construction / will take the stage to facilitate this conversation.

The theme of Lindsey’s lecture is “Care is Choreography”. She will walk through a selection of projects that highlight her call-to-action that architecture be an approach in which material choice combined with the articulation of space is considered as one of the greatest levers we have in bringing humans closer to nature, and that we recognize the moment that we actively eliminate carbon from our palette, and forge new relationships. Shaping the next generation of buildings in our built environment requires an ethical underpinning, a new perspective towards resources. All of which are dedicated to improving the health of the forest, the building occupants, and everyone in between.

Architect Lindsey Wikstrom is the founding partner of Mattaforma. Her forward-thinking work weaves together ideas of care, ecosystems, and the positive influence that design can have in society. Intertwined with built work, Lindsey speaks publicly, publishes, and exhibits her research. Most notably her acclaimed book Designing the Forest and Other Mass Timber Futures (2023). She was also the organizer and moderator of Material Worlds, a speaker series hosted by MoMA’s Emilio Ambasz Institute which invited experts from around the world to envision the future of the most ubiquitous materials on earth. Lindsey is also an educator and has received numerous awards for her work, including the SOM Prize.

Jeffrey L. Day / Actual Architecture Company / .ac joins us for the third Architalx of the season to discuss: “Nonsite Specific”.

Presell tickets are sold out. Limited tickets available at the door.

Using contemporary art as a path towards rethinking some old assumptions, Jeffrey Day will unpack alternative ways that the architecture–site relationship appears in the work of Actual Architecture Co. and the student design-build practice, FACT. The lecture challenges ideas reconsidering site specificity as the suitable matching of prototype to site: generic shape as site adjusted architecture. He will discuss how In this process the architect takes on the role of product developer and site adjuster instead of the more familiar role as designer of supposedly unique objects.

✨TONIGHT! ✨Join us at 6pm at Aura in Portland, ME as Hilary Sample of MOS Architects \ discusses “Unconventional Practices”:

Hilary Sample will discuss architecture as a practice that can be radically inclusive. Its work is to attempt to move things forward in unconventional ways. Through a focus on institutional, educational, collective residential buildings, and public spaces, design focuses on culture and experiences. How does working within a select set of things produce a practice? How might it produce culture? How does practice engage design and a range of audiences? As architecture intersects each kind of project and space, how is culture produced? This talk presents select architecture and design work of MOS, from books to buildings alongside a set of questions about design and making a contemporary unconventional practice.

Hilary Sample is an architect based in New York City. With Michael Meredith, she co-founded the internationally acclaimed Studio MOS. Her work focuses on the creation of cultural and educational spaces within vacant spaces, through collective housing, schools, community centers, galleries, and public art installations. She is the recipient of multiple international awards and is a Professor at Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation and holds the inaugural IDC Foundation Professorship in housing design and culture.
