☠️Phi Kappa Sigma, more commonly known as Skulls, was founded by Dr. Samuel Brown Wylie Mitchell at the University of Pennsylvania. There, he began to discuss the idea with other students, first Charles Hare Hutchinson, and then Alfred Victor du Pont, John Thorne Stone, Andrew Adams Ripka, James Bayard Hodge, and Duane Williams. The seven men formally founded the fraternity on October 19, 1850 becoming the founding fathers of Phi Kappa Sigma☠️

IMPORTANT HOMECOMING UPDATE:

Due to an ongoing investigation by the University into allegations of misconduct against the chapter, the undergraduates are unable to host organized events at the chapter house until the investigation is complete.

What does this mean for Homecoming?

*The Friday night dinner banquet at the Black Bear Inn and 12/OC concert at Kanu are NOT impacted and will continue as planned - see you there!

*Skullumni's Annual Meeting will move from the chapter house to the Acadia Room at the Black Bear Inn (4 Godfrey Dr, Orono). This is the same room as the banquet. The meeting time will still be 9:15-10 am on Saturday, Oct. 14.

*Group seats at the football game is also still a go, although the undergraduates will not be able to organize tailgating (some alumni may still attempt to do so, however).

For those who purchased football tickets and intended to pick them up at the house during Skullumni's annual meeting, please now do so at the new meeting location at the Black Bear Inn during the meeting time (or at the banquet). Skullumni is pleased to announce that the popular country rock band 12/OC will be performing live as part of this year’s Homecoming festivities!

Thanks to the generosity of alumnus Dennis Shea ’84, 12/OC will perform from 8 – 10 pm on Friday, October 13th. The concert will take place at Kanu, a relatively new 3-story restaurant, nightclub & rooftop patio located in the heart of downtown Old Town (283 Main St). (Originally the band was scheduled to perform at the Chapter House but we were unable to obtain permits from the University).

12/OC are the recipients of the following awards and recognitions:

2022 New England Music Award Winners - Rising Star (ME)
2023 New England Music Award Nominee - Country Act of the Year
2023 Nominee for Song of the Year

Alumni attending the 125th anniversary banquet from 5:30 – 7:30 pm should have ample time to drive or find an Uber/taxi to Kanu for the 8 pm start time as it is only 10 minutes from the Black Bear Inn. (Thursday 9/28 is the last day to get tickets to the banquet). Please have a designated driver or use an Uber/taxi if you plan on consuming alcohol.

Admission to Kanu is free for this event. Thanks again to Brother Shea - who is also president of the Phi Kappa Sigma Educational Fund - for this amazing opportunity!

This Thursday, Sept. 28 is your LAST CHANCE to get tickets to the dinner banquet celebrating 125 years of Phi Kappa Sigma at the University of Maine!

Join alumni, undergraduates, and guests for appetizers, dinner, and a cash bar on Friday, October 13, 2023 from 5:30-7:30 pm at the Black Bear Inn in Orono. Alumni from each decade from the 1950s to present will speak briefly about their time at the house. (The band 12/OC is tentatively scheduled to perform live at the Chapter House from 8-10 pm after the banquet!)

Dinner includes Mediterranean chicken, beef tips, vegetable napoleon, green beans, mashed potatoes, and a tossed salad. Drinks and desert also available.

Cost: $20 for Voting Members, $30 for all other alumni and guests. (Voting Members use the discount code emailed to you on Aug. 15.)

Believe it or not, tomorrow is the last day to reserve a hotel room(s) from the block secured by Skullumni for Homecoming weekend.

Skullumni's block is at the Hilton Garden Inn in Bangor. The hotel is right off I-95 and only 10 minutes from campus. The rooms include two queen beds and free wifi and have been booked for both Friday, Oct. 13 and Saturday, Oct. 14. The special room rate is $245/night plus tax.

Skullumni's Annual Meeting is canceled due to lack of quorum. We will send out a notice to schedule a virtual meeting in the near future. We apologize for the inconvenience for those who planned to attend.

Skullumni's Annual Meeting WILL take place at the Chapter House at 9:15 a.m. as planned. The University has given permission to do so.

Although we are still a few days away from releasing the full Schedule of Events for Homecoming 2022, alumni can now purchase tickets to the Homecoming football game. Skullumni has reserved a block of tickets on the 50 yard line for alumni and their guests. Join us as UMaine takes on Monmouth on Saturday, Oct. 15 at 1 p.m. Tickets are $5 (plus fees) for Voting Members and $15 (plus fees) for all guests and non-Voting Members. (Tickets are $20+ at the gate). Voting Members, don't forget to use the discount code we emailed to you to get $10 off your order. We hope to see you in Orono in October!
