Then & Nowđź•°
Providence College’s campus has gone through many changes since the founding in 1917 and opening in 1919. In 1911 and 1913, Rt. Rev. Matthew Harkins, D.D., bishop of the Diocese of Providence purchased property in northwest Providence on which to build the college. The necessary permissions to build a college were slow to progress and it wasn’t until the elections of Rev. James Raymond Meagher, O.P. as provincial in 1913 and Rev. Louis Theissling, O.P. as master general in 1916 that formal permissions from Rome were actively pursued. In 1917, the bill to officially incorporate Providence College was signed by the governor and blessing from Pope Benedict XV was received, jump-starting the building of Providence College. The opening of the college was delayed due to World War One, though courses were taught to sisters at local convents in 1918. In 1919, the college opened its doors to 71 male students and 9 Dominican faculty.
Today, Providence College is home to 4,807 students and 371 full-time faculty members. With an average class size of 19 and a 11:1 faculty to student ratio, it’s no wonder why PC has been ranked #1 in the U.S. News “America’s Best Colleges” regional (north) universities category for five consecutive years. Friar Family is more than a saying, it’s a way of life❤
