Seeking Focus Group Participants
Gubernatorial Debate
Thursday, Nov. 1, 2018
Debate: 7-8 p.m.
Focus Groups: 8:15-9 p.m.
The live broadcast of the gubernatorial debate on Thursday, Nov. 1 is sold out, but the American Democracy Project (ADP) has tickets reserved for Rhode Islanders who are willing to participate in focus groups immediately following the debate. ADP has conducted debate focus groups since 2004 and the research has served to shape the format of debates and has aided local media in assessing citizens’ responses to the candidates.
Focus group participants will receive priority seating at the debates, will be served dinner and will have access to the results of our study. If you reside in Rhode Island, have not volunteered to work in the gubernatorial campaign and can spare a bit of time after the debate broadcast, please consider participating in a focus group.
If interested, please contact Dr. Valerie Endress at [email protected] or (401) 456-4781 and leave a call back number.
Welcome back all. We look forward to another great semester. Now grab your iced coffee and get to class. 😀
Please consider applying.

Welcome back all. Nothing like a little snow to remind us of where we live. ⛸️
If you are still looking for classes, consider COMM 354 Civic Engagement. This class is hands on communication that works with a real client.
Last but not least, don't forget to arrive a little early for class. Parking is always tough the first few weeks of school.
Just a little something to remind everyone it is almost Winter Break. Don't forget to double check your Final Exam schedule and when those final papers are due. Good Luck.
If you are open to working in a non-profit industry after graduation, consider taking the Communication and Civic Engagement course M/W 4:00-5:50. You'll learn how a non-profit runs, and the unique contribution that communication majors can make to the non-profit world. You'll also have some hands-on experience that you can add to your resume. All concentrations are welcome to the course. And, remember, working for a non-profit after graduation doesn't mean that you're working for free. Often starting salaries for young professionals are higher than in the for-profit industry. We'll also learn about community ties and community involvement and how it impacts quality of life for your family, your neighborhood, your state, and the nation. If you are interested in taking this course next semester, contact Dr. Endress.
Paul Thompson will be visiting RIC this Tuesday, 24 October, from 5:00-8:00 in HM 193 to talk about his experiences working as a video assist on over 40 films, including three with Guillermo del Toro - specifically with respect to Crimson Peak, which we'll be screening then!
About Paul: over the past twenty-plus years, Paul Thompson has worked on over 40 feature films, from Academy Award-winning films such as Room and Life of Pi to big-budget extravaganzas such as xXx: The Return of Xander Cage, Su***de Squad, RoboCop (2014), Resident Evil: Afterlife, and The Incredible Hulk (2008). He recently worked on Academy and Emmy Award-winning screenwriter Aaron Sorkin’s directorial debut Molly’s Game, and he has worked with acclaimed director Guillermo del Toro on The Shape of Water, Crimson Peak, and Pacific Rim. He has also worked on cult classics such as Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, and Bride of Chucky.
The Ocean State Film Society is sponsoring this wonderful event.
Every four years, Rhode Island College participates in the prestigious "Congress to Campus" program. For two days and in a wide variety of forums, our distinguished guests will offer an authentic and candid "insiders" look at Congress, the growing problem of poltiical bullying, the enormous effects of social media on politics, and the ways in which millennial officeholders might change the face of poltics. Please mark your calendars!
Next Wednesday, 20 September 2017, at 2:00-3:50 in the Cerilli Screening Room (Horace Mann 193), documentary filmmaker Re*****on Smith will be screening and discussing his film Rubbertown, about the residents of a polluted industrial neighborhood in Louisville, Kentucky. All are invited to this free event sponsored by the Committee on College Lectures!
This Saturday, 16 September 2017, at 5:30 p.m. in Gaige Auditorium, RIC alumnus Paul Baker ('94) will be meeting with students to discuss his wide-ranging career out in Hollywood. He'll also screen and discuss two short films he's made. Then at 7:00 p.m. - also in Gaige Auditorium - we'll have the East Coast Premiere of his latest short film The Boxer, a comedy-drama starring the guy who I think works as Matt Damon's stand-in. All are welcome to these free events sponsored by the Ocean State Film Society. Please see the attached image for a copy of the movie poster.
Welcome back, everyone. Don't forget that parking is always an issue during the first few weeks. Leave early and be prepared to hunt for a spot. Most importantly, have a great semester.

Political Speechwriters: A Look Behind the Scenes
2:00-3:30 p.m. on Monday, October 17th in Alger 110
The American Democracy Project has the opportunity to bring to Rhode Island College some of the most respected political speechwriters in the nation. In this forum, we will explore the intimate relationship between speechwriter and speaker, and seek to understand how political speeches are constructed and negotiated among a team of writers. These behind-the-scenes strategists influence political dialogue far more than the average citizen realizes, and this event is designed to shed light on the process. We think that this group of speechwriters will have some very interesting stories to tell.
Writers for Howard Dean, Martin O’Malley, and President Obama will be among the compelling panelists:
Parag Mehta, chief of staff to the U.S. Surgeon General and former speechwriter for senate candidate Ron Kirk and presidential candidate Howard Dean.
Sarada Peri, special assistant and senior speechwriter to President Obama.
Steve Rabin, senior advisor for NASA’s Office of Communications, former speechwriter for Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley and former press secretary for Anthony Weiner.
Michael E. Smith, former speechwriter for Rhode Island Office of the Governor and former speechwriter for RIC Office of the President.
