This is the first event in a series seeking to bring together students and faculty with international backgrounds to discuss pressing issues of our time. In the wake of the Black Lives Matter protests of 2020, there has been an increase in discourse about policing, abolitionism, and carcerality. Joined by Professors Magda Boutros and Aalyia Sadruddin, whose research interests focus on violence and policing we will be talking about how these concepts manifest themselves outside the United States in particular reimagining social order, problematizing our conceptions of violence, and interrogating dominant narratives surrounding policing. RSVP Here!

Professor Magda Boutros is a sociologist who studies social movements against policing and the criminal justice system. Her book project examines contemporary French mobilizations organizing against racialized policing practices. It analyzes how movement actors overcome opacity around police actions and the French race-blind ideology to produce knowledge about the practices they denounce, and how different modes of knowledge production matter for the movement’s outcomes.

Trained in medical and political anthropology, Professor Aalyia Sadruddin’s research focuses on issues of demographic transitions and socio-political recovery in the wake of violence in contemporary Africa. Since 2014, Sadruddin has conducted research on the processes and politics of aging in post-genocide Rwanda.
