This Festival will showcase various actors, actresses, and filmmakers who will not only share their works, but their journeys in the film industry. This page will allow for our visitors to see our members at work with updates on speakers for the festival, films that will be featured, and much more! The Rhode Island Black Film Festival - Oak Bluffs Library presents the movie and discussion of “Dr. Ira Reid: Haverford College’s Unsung Scholar Activist” featuring a discussion with screenwriter, film director Rel Dowdell and a panel of cast members from the Film.
Rel Dowdell is an American screenwriter, film director, film producer, and English/film studies/screenwriting educator. Born and raised in Philadelphia, he received his bachelor's degree in English with magna cm laude honors from Fisk University and a master's degree in film and screenwriting with highest distinction from Boston University Internationally award-winning writer/director Rel Dowdell, filmmaker of Dr. Ira Reid: Haverford College's Unsung Scholar Activist "Train Ride," "Changing the Game," and "Where's Daddy?" films have appeared in several film festivals including the Rhode Island Black Film Festival.

Director Rel Dowdel and members of the production team will discuss the film and Dr. Reid’s impact on diversity at the college level. A reception will follow the discussion. The Rhode Island Black Film Festival presents our annual BLACK CLASSIC UNDER THE STARS, August 22, 7p.m. featuring an evening of Live Music followed by one of your favorite films from the 80’s, 90’s or yes even the 70’s. Legendary local saxophonist Randy Ashe, Ashe & Company will start the evening off with a little blues and jazz. Black Classics Under the Stars is free. Sponsored by the 195 District Park, Rhode Island Expansion Arts and the Rhode Island Council for Humanities Thrive Grant.

The Rhode Island Black Film Festival is the first of its kind in the Ocean State. Sharing the stories on film dedicated to celebrating films by, for, and about people of color. In its second year, the Rhode Island Black Film Festival gives a voice to diverse cultures both local and worldwide. With a varied lineup of narrative, documentary, feature and films. The Rhode Island Black Film Festival features emerging film makers, actors and film industry insiders sharing their passion for the artistry of cinema. The Rhode Island Black Film Festival where social justice and cinema take a seat.
