Please join us on Monday, Sept. 30, from 4:30-6 p.m. in Falvey Library’s Speakers’ Corner for the Interfaith Human Library.

In this library you can check out human "books”—faculty/staff/community members of diverse backgrounds (Baha’i, Buddhist, Catholic, Hindu, Jewish, Muslim, Quaker, Sikh, and more) to learn more about how they practice their faith/worldview identity. Small groups of students will meet with a different speaker for three 20-minute sessions. Curiosity is the only pre-requisite for this unique conversation opportunity! REGISTER HERE.

This ACS-approved event is co-sponsored by Campus Ministry, the Department of Theology and Religious Studies, and Falvey Library. It is open to Villanova faculty, staff, and students (both undergraduate and graduate). Light refreshments will be served.

Sean Dinan, LSW, Substance Use Counselor in the Patricia B. & Gary M. Holloway University Counseling Center, has worked with departments across campus to promote health and recovery to the Villanova community. Falvey Library worked with partners to host important training sessions with the nonprofit Savage Sisters that can help save lives, including overdose reversal training, teaching attendess how to identify signs of a drug overdose and administer Narcan, a lifesaving drug. We talked with Sean about the value of this partnership and its impact in the community.

Q: Last spring, the University Counseling Center partnered with Falvey Library for overdose reversal training. Why is this training valuable to the Villanova community?

A. The overdose epidemic impacts people from all walks of life--whether firsthand or through family, friends and loved ones. College campuses are not immune; learning to recognize signs of an overdose and administering Narcan can help save lives and give people a chance at recovery.

Q: How did working with the Library impact this event and its awareness for students, staff, and faculty?

A: Collaborating with the library was a wonderful experience. They were incredibly easy to coordinate with, and I think that partnering with other groups outside of the counseling center helps emphasize how important the training is. I believe that hosting the event in Falvey was impactful, because it’s an accessible area of campus that sees a lot of traffic. By having the event at Speakers' Corner, we were able to attract individuals who perhaps didn’t even know that the event was being held.

Q: There is a second training being offered Oct. 4 12-1:30 p.m. in the Library. What should attendees who are unfamiliar with overdose reversal training expect if they attend?

A: Attendees of the training should expect to learn about tenets of harm reduction, updated drug trends in the Philadelphia area, learning to recognize signs of an overdose, and how to administer Narcan. Pizza will also be available for those in attendance!

Join us Thursday, Sept. 26 at 5 p.m. in Speakers' Corner for a talk by Glenn Bracey, PhD, Assistant Professor, Department of Sociology & Criminology at Villanova University. Dr. Bracey will discuss his co-authored book, The Religion of Whiteness: How Racism Distorts Christian Faith. The Religion of Whiteness offers a new perspective that racial inequality is perpetuated because it is a necessary feature of a religion, a religion practiced and held dearly by millions of people. That religion, which we label the Religion of Whiteness, raises racial interests to the level of spiritual commitment, rivaling followers' commitment to Christianity itself.

Falvey Library and Villanova Law Library in Villanova University's Charles Widger School of Law joined more than 5,ooo students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends to volunteer a day of service in the greater Philadelphia area July 7.

The day, part of the St. Thomas of Villanova Celebration, has been a signature event created by the Rev. Peter M. Donohue, OSA, PhD, in 2006. Originally conceived as a one-time effort, the Day of Service has continued for 18 years and grown to include 15 alumni chapters who volunteered in their own areas of the country.

Amy A. Emerson, Assistant Dean for Library and Information Services & Professor of Law, in the Widger School of Law, joined Shawn Proctor and an orientation group of first-year students along with their orientation leader, at the Joy of Sox (TJOS), a nonprofit in Phoenixville, Pa. The sixteen volunteers organized and cleaned spaces and built shelving to help the TJOS prepare for new donations of socks that will be handed out to women, men, and children experiencing homelessness.

During last year's Day of Service, TJOS reached the one million pair of socks donated! Here's to the many Villanovans who helped make an impact this Day of Service!

Stephen Green, Assistant Director of Villanova's Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (IIE), sat down with me to talk about the impact of the partnerships between Falvey Library and IIE's Idea Lab, located on the ground floor of the Library.

How have you worked with the Library, as a building partner and department within Falvey?

Our location on the ground floor of the Library has made partnering with Falvey staff part of IIE's strategy on campus. We have co-sponsored events with Library staff, hosted Library events in the Idea Lab, and continue to explore new opportunities all of the time. In fact, we just toured the Digital Scholarship Lab and were very impressed with the equipment and expertise offered there.

How has work with Falvey both supported IIE's mission and the students you serve?

We work with students who have an almost infinite number of goals, reaching in different directions. Some want to start a business. Others want to start a podcast. Some just want to learn a new skill like laser cutting, 3D printing, or another craft. There are many times we can help students realize those goals within the Idea Lab, but the Library has staff and resources that supplement ours and help students in so many other ways.

Why would you recommend departments across campus reach out to partner with the Library?

Falvey staff are energetic and welcoming. They're guides for students, but they are also experts in creating new partnerships, even ones that have not yet been conceptualized. If you have a vision but not the staff and resources to bring it to life, reach out to them: Falvey can and will make it happen.

Brian McCabe, Director, Spirituality and Outreach, sat down with me to talk about Mindfulness Mondays. He explained how partnerships between Villanova's Mission and Ministry and Falvey Library helps the office increase its reach on campus.

Falvey has partnered with Mission and Ministry for Mindfulness Mondays event since 2022. Why did this partnership make sense for this particular event series?

Falvey is one of the best partners on campus. To Mindfulness Mondays, (the staff) brought creative thinking and skills along with their reputation for engaging and holistic programming that engages our community in mind, body, and spirit. In concrete and intangible ways, the Library has a way of elevating the quality of all of the programs with which they engage.

How has Falvey helped made Mindfulness Mondays successful for the campus community?

Falvey has dedicated organizational and creative skill to elevating the visibility and accessibility of Mindfulness Mondays to help reach a broader audience. This support, along with the active participation of many of its staff, has expanded the number of people who attend Mindfulness sessions. Regina Duffy, Kallie Stahl, and their colleagues have been incredible partners.

Why is this a worthwhile event for people who have not yet attended?

Mindfulness Mondays provides participants to engage in a range of practices of attention and awareness in the present moment. These practices often focus on the breath or the body in ways that allow us to notice what is happening within and around us.

In world, where activity, information, and commitment pull our attention in different directions at all times, Mindfulness practices invite us to more fully notice what is happening including our own judgments of ourselves. Each session is intended to welcome people who have never encountered Mindfulness before as well as long-time practitioners.
