Here's an example from a South American tissue plant: They had done some really good things in the plant over the past 2-3 years, but they had not been able to achieve stable reliability performance of their production lines. The plant was hovering around the high 70s [%] for their Overall Equipment Efficiency (OEE).
The business consultant they had been working with had coached them on focusing on “low hanging fruit” 🍎 and “quick results” in order to get quick financial impacts. But they were stagnant because they weren't focused on long-term results. https://www.idcon.com/resource-library/leadership-in-maintenance/maintenance-results-focus/

Is measuring maintenance schedule compliance the right KPI?
If your organization is very reactive, for example over 30% of all daily work not planned and scheduled the day before, it can be a waste of time to measure schedule compliance because you know it is poor. Instead, measure what causes the break in work and then take action to eliminate those causes. https://www.idcon.com/resource-library/work-management-planning-scheduling/philosophy-planning-scheduling-difference/

What are some maintenance scheduling 🗓 basics?
Best practice is to communicate the next day schedule to tradespeople at end of each day. Worst practice is to post work orders and then tradespeople select what work to do. A scheduler needs to be able to think logically through variety to complex situations to build a schedule that provides maximum value to the organization. What's The Difference Between Maintenance Planning and Scheduling? - IDCON Maintenance planning and scheduling are two key elements of the total “Maintenance Work Management Process”. The planning and scheduling maintenance
Who should be creating the work schedule for planned maintenance work? Inc believe the front-line supervisor is the natural role that should prepare the schedule as they know the team best. However, if the maintenance supervisor is too busy responding to reactive work, they will not be able to complete and publish the schedules at the optimal time. If that's the case, we suggest another person be assigned the scheduler role.

❓Who should be reviewing maintenance work requests (notifications) and why?
An Operations Maintenance Coordinator or Maintenance Supervisor should review the work request (notifications). Why? When someone reviews maintenance work requests, they can ensure the right priority has been used and that the request isn't a duplicated. They should confirm and adjust the work priority if it doesn’t match the priority guidelines established and agreed upon by operations and maintenance.

What's The Difference Between Maintenance Planning and Scheduling? - IDCON Maintenance planning and scheduling are two key elements of the total “Maintenance Work Management Process”. The planning and scheduling maintenance
The simple fact is that every maintenance job is planned by someone because at some point in any maintenance job, someone must decide exactly what will be done and how to do it. Unfortunately, we’ve seen all too often it’s the tradesperson who does this because work was scheduled but not planned ⌚️ . This is an ineffective way to perform maintenance work, even in an emergency.

Standardizing Spare Parts naming is challenging due to inconsistent descriptions from manufacturers, leading to confusion. Varying part templates in CMMS & ERP systems complicate matters. Experts recommend a comprehensive system with clear naming guidelines, collaboration with manufacturers, and user-friendly software for smoother operations. https://www.idcon.com/resource-library/materials-management/spare-parts-description-naming-convention/

Electronics and hydraulics need to be kept clean. They ideally should be stored in pressurized room or at minimum in a cool, clean environment.

I'm going to show you on the screen here, but I put together a few slides around preventive maintenance of spare parts because we see a lot of reliability problems in the plants, mines and mills that we visit. A few examples of typical things that really impacts reliability.

Bad spare parts management examples: We've seen bearings completely open sometimes even in some cases, wrap them and put them on the shelf. I've seen open packs where people were looking for bearings, to open the pack and if it's the wrong bearing and then put it back without closing the pack. All they need to do is maybe put it in another ziplock! https://www.idcon.com/spare-parts-management-training/
Your maintenance team cannot locate the right part if the key information does not exist. This is why having defined naming conventions is needed. The amount of qualifiers in a naming convention is dictated by the length of the Description field in your CMMS or ERP software 💻 . Usually, you can add additional information in the long description field or purchase text. However, this information seldom appears in reports or in screens (unless triggered).

In our opinion, spare parts should be fully described with a complete, concise description that will lead the maintenance planner or technician to select the correct part from a printed or electronic catalogue. In addition, the description should preclude misinterpretation by the supplier of what is being purchased. Search engines built into the different systems improves locating a spare part.
