Earlier this week, our UAS team supported the North Carolina Department of Transportation / North Carolina Division of Aviation 2024 Hurricane Response Training at Sanford Community College. Participants learned hurricane response protocols such as media relations and submitting imagery to NCDOT's portal--and even had a chance to test their flying skills in the NIST test lane we set up.

Will We Build Cities for Humans or Machines? 04/15/2024

ITRE’s Evan Arnold and Kai Monast shared their expertise in drones and public transportation with JoAnna Klein for NC State’s Long View Project, participating in an in-depth interview on the future of transportation alongside research ecologist Adam Terando.

It was a great conversation that led to one overarching question: Will We Build Cities for Humans or Machines?

NCEES making big changes to the Civil Engineering PE Exam in 2024 | Breadth and Depth Format Ending 12/14/2023

The Civil Engineering PE Exam is changing in April 2024!

NCEES is ending the breadth/depth aspect of the Civil PE Exam - starting in April 2024, there will no longer be a common morning/breadth portion. Each of the five disciplines will be different exams. As an example, only transportation discipline examinees will have any transportation questions (everyone else will not have any, but some disciplines will still have overlap). If you have any questions, please let us know. ITRE has been providing PE exam review courses for 40 years and we're working to continue to provide an effective course to help you pass the exam.

Brief video explaining the change: https://youtu.be/W2fLZN3uzM8

Last week, Jonah, Mary, and Kai visited the High Point Furniture Market to better understand how they provide transportation when 75,000 visitors descend on a city of 125,000 people. The market is held twice yearly, for a week in April and October, and consists of 12 million sq. ft. of show space over 13 city blocks!

Providing transportation for the High Point Market costs about $2 million per year, and is an operation of remarkable scale and flexibility that doesn't involve High Point's public transportation provider at all.

Our team identified several key structural elements that ensure smooth operations:

Transportation center:
All market transportation vehicles service the market transportation center, a purpose-built facility consisting of a covered area with 4 lanes and multiple bus bays. The facility was built with federal, state, and local funds in 2003, and is staffed to help with loading people on the proper vehicles and answer questions.

Dedicated busways:
Three blocks in the core of the market area around the transportation center are restricted to transportation and service vehicles identified with special placards. Access is managed by a team of traffic control specialists.

Operations center:
The Morehead Community Center is a parks and recreation center owned by the City of High Point. This facility serves as the operations and logistics headquarters and has space for vehicle staging. It is located a few blocks from the market area.

Airport tables:
Market staff are at the major airports to greet attendees and provide logistics support.

On board attendants:
In addition to drivers, the vehicles servicing hotels also have attendants to assist with market-goers’ transportation needs and coordinate information.

Transportation at High Point Market comes in many forms, including:
- Airport transportation and park and ride served by coach buses
- Downtown loops served by transit-style buses
- Scheduled hotel shuttles served by coach buses supplemented with vans
- On-demand hotel shuttles served by vans
- GoAnywhere/microtransit on-demand service provided by SUVs

Yesterday were thrilled to host "Different, Different World," a hands-on workshop where participants got firsthand experience with communication challenges that people who are Deaf, Hard of Hearing, and DeafBlind face in their everyday lives.

Each interactive station offered a different experiential learning opportunity, such as simulations of different levels of sight and/or hearing loss, and communication methods including American Sign Language, gesturing, and lip reading.

We enormously appreciate all of the presenters, facilitators, interpreters, and attendees who made the workshop such a success. Thank you to the NC DHHS Division of Services for the Deaf & Hard of Hearing for offering this unique and extraordinary training opportunity!
