On June 19, 1865, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed, Union General Gordon Granger along with his troops marched into Galveston, TX to announce the ending of the Civil War, and the abolishment of slavery.

Because of the small amount of Union presence in Texas, slaves didn’t know they were freed until two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed into order.

As an HBCU in today’s world, SAU celebrates this day that much more. From the 11 episcopal priests who founded this institution to the students who quarried rocks to build our Historic Chapel, our scholars of today and our alumni are our ancestors wildest dreams! Happy Juneteenth! 🐦💙✊🏾
