Happy Chuseok 2023!
(Korean Thanksgiving, Sept. 28-30, 2023)
Chuseok literally "Autumn eve", is a major harvest festival and a three-day holiday in Korea celebrated on the 15th day of the 8th month of the lunar calendar on the full moon. Like many other harvest festivals around the world, it is held around the autumn equinox, i.e. at the very end of summer or in early autumn.
It is a time for family of many generations to gather and celebrate with traditional ceremonies, festivities and of course, food! Songpyeon, traditional rice cakes, and Jeon, various savory fried korean pancakes made from fish, vegetables, etc.
From our family to yours...
Happy Chuseok 추석 잘 보내세요!

새해 복 많이 받으세요! Happy Lunar New Year to ALL of our KICKS families and friends! It's the year of the TIGER!
새해 복 많이 받으세요 (saehae bok mani badeuseyo) This phrase is the go-to way of saying ‘Happy New Year‘ in Korean. 새해 is one of the words that means ‘new year’, 복 means ‘luck’, and 많이 means ‘many’ or ‘lots of’. 받으세요 is the honorific way of saying 받다, meaning ‘to receive’.
Korean Seollal 설날 (Lunar New Year; first day of the lunar calendar) is one of the most celebrated national holidays in Korea. While many observe Sinjeong (Solar New Year; January 1 of the Gregorian/Western calendar), Koreans also celebrate Seollal, which usually lasts for three days (the day of, the day before, and the day after). This year, Seollal falls on February 1 of the Gregorian calendar.
More than just a holiday to mark the beginning of a new year, Seollal is truly a special occasion for Korean people. Not only is it a time for paying respect to ancestors, but it is also an opportunity to catch up with family members. During Seollal, Koreans usually perform ancestral rites, play folk games, eat traditional foods, listen to stories and talk well into the night.
The year 2022 is referred to as Iminnyeon (‘Im-‘ meaning black, and ‘-in’ meaning tiger) or “The Year of the Black Tiger.” The tiger, the third animal deity of the Sibijisin, is regarded as a sacred beast that wards off evil spirits. Black tiger is associated with strength, independence, challenge, and wisdom.
