September is Su***de Prevention Month!

As we recognize those we’ve lost to su***de, we work diligently to prevent su***de and keep other people safe. Here are a few facts about su***de and ways you can help:

Suicidal thoughts, like many mental health challenges, can affect anyone regardless of age, gender and background.

Know the warning signs for su***de like increased alcohol and drug use, aggressive behavior, withdrawal from friends, family and community, dramatic mood swings and impulsive or reckless behavior.

Other behaviors to look out for include collecting and saving pills or buying a weapon, giving away possessions, tying up loose ends, like organizing personal papers or paying off debts, and saying goodbye to friends and family.

Ask direct questions: Do you have thoughts about su***de? Are you thinking of killing yourself? It will not put the idea in someone’s mind.

Keep the Crisis Text Line handy and save 988 in your phone.

Let’s Save Lives Together !

Staff at allcove Beach Cities have completed safety plans for 75 young people ages 12-25 in our South Bay community. Having completed a safety plan means that the young person was experiencing suicidal thoughts.
According to the 2024 California Healthy Kids Survey, 8% of Beach Cities 11th graders reported seriously considering attempting su***de within the past 12 months. This data in conjunction with the number of safety plans shows the urgent need for mental health support for our young people. If you or someone you know is feeling distressed, reach out for help.

Here are some resources that are available 24/7.

-Text “LA” to 741-741 to reach the Crisis Text Line.
-Call 988 to reach the National Su***de and Crisis Lifeline.
-Call 1-866-488-7386 to reach The Trevor Project for crisis intervention services specific for LGBTQ+ youth.

United Against Hate Week (Sep. 21-27, 2024) is a call for local civic action to stop the hate and implicit biases that are a dangerous threat to the safety and civility of our neighborhoods, towns, and cities. United Against Hate Week emerged from a United Against Hate poster campaign created by Bay Area Cities in response to white supremacist rallies in Berkeley and San Francisco in 2017. Since its inception, United Against Hate Week has spread to more than 200 communities, including all of Los Angeles County, faith-based groups, LGBTQ, and human rights organizations, and is beginning to take off in communities across the U.S.
