The Big Lift

A bold venture to close the opportunity gap so more kids succeed. In San Mateo County, we want all our children to get the right start.

Today, kids from prosperous families get quality preschool and enrichment of many kinds in the first five years of life, when 95% of brain development occurs. The other kids usually don’t. Up to third grade, kids learn to read. After, they must read to learn. This is a critical inflection point where we lose children we need for our knowledge economy. This is not a minor issue. 43% of our county’s

The Big Lift is dedicated to ensuring San Mateo County third graders are confident readers by the end of the school year. We recognize some children face more barriers than others.

Moving forward, it is critical the Big Lift has an operationalized equity framework. By 2026, we are going to name the disparities that arise based on race and other identities, make investments that prioritize communities experiencing the greatest inequities in outcomes, and engage those communities in a way that centers their voice and perspective. Summer learning loss is one of the biggest challenges children face while learning to read. Our communities love The Big Lift Inspiring Summers programs for rising Kindergartners to rising third-graders.

We were thrilled to have 943 students (96% of our goal!) join Inspiring Summers for a summer of fun and reading this year!

Looking ahead, by 2026, we want to see 60% of eligible rising K-3rd graders in the Big Lift’s districts enrolled in high quality summer learning programs. To learn more about how we are going to do it, review our strategic plan on our website, thebiglift.org

School attendance - it matters! But why? Research shows that school attendance is closely tied to school achievement. Studies of early elementary students have found that kindergarten absenteeism is tied to negative outcomes in first grade, including lower achievement in reading, math, and general knowledge.

Chronic absenteeism, which means missing more than 10% of school days, is a big problem in San Mateo County! Absenteeism has increased significantly since the return to school following the COVID-19 pandemic.

Schools, parents, and kids can all work together to make sure kids are in school and learning as much as possible. Parents, plan vacations to coincide with school holidays, and send children to school every day that they are well. It all adds up! The benefits for your student are worth it!

It’s back to school week! Here are 5 things to put into practice for making this transition easier, so that children AND parents are ready for the school year and all of the exciting learning to come.

1. Be ready on day one. ✨Talk about the upcoming school year with your child, shop for school supplies, and get belongings ready in advance. This will minimize stress for your child in the first days of school.

2. Establish a routine. ✨This should include a good bedtime routine that ensures your child gets enough sleep and a morning routine that isn’t too rushed.

3. Read aloud! ✨Reading stories before bed can be a helpful part of a calming bedtime routine Reading 20 minutes per day has a big impact on your child’s reading success. Find tips on our parent website, Let’s Read San Mateo County! https://letsreadsmc.org/

4. Attend every day. ✨School attendance is a big factor in children’s reading success. Unless your child is sick, they should attend school every day.

5. Talk to your child and their teacher. ✨Ask your child about their day. What questions did they ask? Did they read any stories? Did they write any words? Stay up to date with what they’re learning. If you have questions or concerns at any point, talk to their teacher.

In San Mateo County, only 58% of third-graders are reading at their grade level.

This is especially true for low-income families. Our county has one of the highest wealth disparities in the country. We can, and must, close this gap. Reading is like a superpower for our brains and helps children do well in school.

Our Story

In San Mateo County we want all our children to get the right start!

The Big Lift is a bold social venture intent on transforming early learning. The venture combines high-quality and connected learning experiences for San Mateo County preschool to third grade students. This early learning transformation is focused on literacy, reducing chronic absence, and summer learning loss, as well as engaging families and the broader community to support both home and school learning.

We know ninety-five percent of brain development occurs in the first five years of life. Yet, kids from higher-income families participate in quality preschool and enrichment programs at far greater rates than students from lower-income families. This inequity leads to a knowledge opportunity gap that starts as young as four years old.
