Happy National ! 🛳️

Every year on May 22, those within the maritime industry reflect on its influence and impact on the growth of our nation.

Fun fact: The first National Maritime Day was celebrated on May 20, 1933, but U.S. Congressman switched the annual holiday celebration to May 22 to commemorate the day the American steamship Savannah set sail from Savannah, Georgia in 1819.

Here at the Port of Redwood City, we're proud of the operations and support our imports provide for the broader Silicon Valley region and the national economy. Come celebrate with your friends at the Port by taking a breezy boat ride at 459 Seaport Court or by visiting the San Francisco Maritime Museum https://www.nps.gov/safr/index.htm

In honor of National Women's Month, let's take a look at the influence women have in maritime history. ⛵👩

As the first woman to sail across the Pacific Ocean by herself in 1969, Sharon Sites Adams encouraged women across the world that it is important for their presence to have a role in the maritime industry. Through her bravery, Adams was named the Los Angeles Times Women of Year in 1969.

Dawn Riley is another significant women in maritime history because she was the first woman to manage an American Cup syndicate, a well-known international sailing competition. Today, Riley continues her effort to provide access to all in the sport of sailing.

Krystyna Chojnowska-Liskiewicz, a polish sailor, earned her title as “First Lady of the Oceans,” through her courageous efforts to become the first woman to sail around the earth in 1978. She continued her interest in maritime by becoming a shipbuilding engineer and yachting sea captain.

These are just a few of the many women who've made significant contributions to the maritime industry. Let's celebrate women in maritime together!
