EKU Meadowbrook Farm
EKU Meadowbrook Farm serves EKU students with hands-on experiential learning in many aspects of agriculture and natural sciences.
The Fall semester is busy enough around here between harvest, calving, farrowing, getting out cover crops and the constant cycle of the dairy... then you add in the labs and various student groups on top of that and you'll find everyone running pretty hard.
That doesn't stop these students from taking some time to work with their animals for livestock show this Fall, though. Between classes throughout the day you'll find them bonding with and training their animals, and to be honest it's one of the best parts of the Fall. We sometimes even find students here from outside of the Agriculture Department, and that really let's us know that good things are happening out here.
We have another group of finish pigs in the 280-300 pound range and ready to move on to a new home for $1.00/lb live weight
You can pick these up here at the farm or we can make an appointment with Summit Meats in Science Hill and you can pay them for processing when you pick up the outstanding finished product!
Just reach out if this is something you'd be interested in and we will be happy to help.
Happy First Day of Fall from EKU Meadowbrook Farm!!! We are still early in the season and the colors aren't going too crazy, yet, so here are some beautiful Fall pics from the other side of Campus Beautiful!
Sarah Anderson and Alanna Potter joined us this evening for their AGR 126 Dairy Lab, where they were able to learn the ins and outs of our robotic milking system here at EKU!
It was a pleasure working with both of these young ladies and we look forward to watching their future academic endeavors.
We grabbed this shot as we were moving our Spring calving herd across the creek to another field. We may be swimming in pumpkins and corn, but moments like these always remind us Fall is drawing nearer.
Everyone go see our friends in the Horticulture Department to add that special flare to your displays!
Good Evening Everyone! We want to apologize to those that stopped by today and were unable to pick up one of our beautiful mums. Good news! We plan to be open tomorrow, Friday, 11-4. We hope to see you there!
Fellow Colonels and friends in the community, the time has come.
Our pumpkins are ready! Since this is our first year we are running them on a special of $5.00 a pumpkin, regardless of size. You can pick your own or buy from some we've already picked!
Need a little extra? We will have foddershocks available as well for $10.00 a bundle while supplies last.
Student groups and campus offices please don't hesitate to reach out if you'd like to come out and take a farm tour and grab some pumpkins for a change of scenery through the day! We'd be happy to see you.
We are open for pumpkin sales every day from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. We take cash, check, or card. Reach out to us on here or email us at [email protected]!
This morning we made our first pumpkin delivery to the Berea Tourism Office! They wanted 40 nice Jack O'Lanterns and EKU was happy to help.
Farm Manager Matt Collins and Crops / Swine guy Brandon Davidson took this opportunity for a rare but always enjoyed Matt & Brandon selfie after unloading everything.
Around the time we developed this page for the farm, we started telling our students to feel free to send us pictures they snap while they're here. The students often provide us with the most unique insight to this special place, as they interact with all of this from so many different perspectives.
Perspectives like this one, sent to us from Sidni Davidson as she was working with her pig to show in this Fall's EKU Livestock Show.
She sent us this picture with the simple caption, "the face of happiness".
We agree full heartedly.
Everyone welcome Sophomore Abby Otto to her first semester of AGR 301! Abby is an Agriculture Major with a concentration in livestock management. She was here at 6 o'clock this morning ready to learn everything she could, and she did not disappoint. We look forward to seeing what she will accomplish this semester and letting everyone here watch her grow!
Chopping the silage is only half of the harvest. In this video we see Assistant Farm Manager (and Meadowbrook Hero) Robby Estes "bagging" the silage. Once the silage is sealed up in this bag it will ferment, preserving the nutritional value and integrity of the silage for the months to come!
All of the silage we feed here at the farm is grown and harvested here as well, and what we harvest every Fall is generally enough (typically more) to keep our cows happy until the next harvest season!
This view never gets old. It's significantly quieter with the back window closed but the video just isn't as clear.
This no till corn has actually done very well for us considering the season it's had. We think the cattle will really enjoy this when they find it this winter!
Fall semester is now settled in and the labs and students are a constant presence again here at the farm, and we are loving it!
Here we have Dr. Kenealy's AGR 126 student Jessica Steiner knocking her dairy lab portion of the class out of the park! Great job on your hard work yesterday, Jessica!
Operation Harvest Corn Silage 2024 is officially underway here at EKU Meadowbrook Farm!
Today (August 30th) is College Colors Day! We did our best to comb through our pictures and find the amazing EKU family sporting the maroon and white around the farm!
Do you have any pictures of your Colonel Pride out here? If so we'd love to see it in the comments!

Nothing makes a person working in higher education at 6:00 in the morning any happier than watching a student's eyes light up as they're able to help teach their own peers.
Jasmine Azvedo started working as a student employee this past summer, and yesterday morning she passed on knowledge gained from her own hands on experiences to one of her peers. In this instance she was explaining the intricacies of the software utilized in our robotic milking system here at the dairy.
Moments like these are what we all strive for here at EKU.
The eastern side of campus beautiful is only about a 12 minute drive from the center of campus.. and on cool mornings like this there isn't a more peaceful place to be.
Let's start this week off right and have a great one, friends!

It may have been before 6:00 a.m., but that wasn't going to slow down returning AGR301 student / legend Kendall Clark from marking the start of her semester with us!
Kendall always knows how to make us smile and make the farm an even happier place and we always enjoy her presence. We can't wait to share her journey with you all this semester!

While we utilize no-till practices whenever possible, there are times certain fields on this property require a little TLC with a moldboard plow.
It also happens that there is not a soul on this farm that enjoys plowing (or is as good at it) as Assistant Farm Manager Robby Estes.
We will be seeding alfalfa into this field in no time if the soil keeps working this nicely.
... get ready, Colonels!

What a wonderful time the Agriculture Department at Eastern Kentucky University-EKU brought to the new and returning students! The rain definitely never slowed them down.
All of us here at the farm this afternoon, waiting for everything to get started next Monday.
Also, everyone, meet Phyllis / 1626. She's basically the Queen of Meadowbrook Farm and she knows it.
Students are moving in as we speak and classes start next week! We can't emphasize how excited we are to welcome everyone back to the farm!
We are also really looking forward to our annual crop of Fall AGR 301 students.
Mr. "Makes-it-Happen" Steve Caudill isn't above doing anything to help out anyone on campus... but the students are the ones who really benefit from the experience of weighing up steers for the state fair today!
Classes are almost back in session and we are all here for you! It was wonderful to be able to see everyone at the annual employee convocation this morning!
