This week we want to introduce daily activities that can be done at home to experience Japanese culture and bring a little joy into our homes.

Today's activity is Japanese woodblock printing, which was popularized in Japan in the Edo period as a process to reproduce hand-scrolls into affordable books. It was later adopted as a means to mass-produce art prints, "ukiyo-e", such as the famous "The Great Wave off Kanagawa" by Hokusai. Ukiyo-e literally means “Pictures of the Floating World". This famous style of Japanese woodblock print depicts scenes such as city life, romantic landscapes, nature, and more.

You can learn about the history and characteristics of Japanese woodblock printing here.
