On behalf of the faculty, staff, and students of the University of California, Riverside, we cordially invite you to our celebration and blessing of the new Native American Garden at our campus on Tuesday, April 9, 2024 from 12pm – 2pm with check-in beginning at 11am. The vision for the Native American Garden is to provide a learning and living garden that will honor the land’s original inhabitants. This project was planned in collaboration with a working group that included campus leadership, staff, faculty, students, and Indigenous community representatives who came together to review the concepts and designs to bring this vision to light.

The garden is a physical recognition that our campus is located on Indigenous lands of the ‘Ivilyuatem (Cahuilla), Tongva (Gabrielino), Maarrênga'yam (Serrano), and Payómkawichum (Luiseño). The University of California, Riverside, is in the heart of Indigenous lands, and we respectfully acknowledge that we live and work on the beloved lands of California’s first peoples.

This Grand Opening will include a welcome by the Director of California Center for Native Nations, Wallace Cleaves, an opening prayer by Elder Ernest Siva, statements by Chancellor Kim Wilcox, Professor Gerald Clarke Jr., Elder (Scholar in Residence) Lorene Sisquoc, and Cahuilla Bird Singers.
