Acadia Center
We advance bold, effective clean energy solutions for a livable climate in the Northeast and beyond. State and community action is needed now more than ever.
Acadia Center was founded in 1998 with the belief that we cannot wait for federal climate policy, and that states can ignite national action. We are committed to helping meet and exceed the climate goals that will improve the lives of people and their communities.

Senior Advocate and Massachusetts Program Director Kyle Murray's Op-Ed on Massachusetts' recent big win at the Department of Public Utilities and the future of the natural gas system
Amid the climate doom, a bright spot in Mass. Massachusetts' Department of Public Utilities just took an important step towards ending the state's reliance on natural gas forever, writes Kyle Murray.
Offshore wind off Rhode Island’s coast meets a critical need for large-scale carbon-free electricity generation in the Northeast; the benefits of these projects far outweigh the impacts.
The climate crisis threatens our communities as well as our state’s historic and cultural heritage.

Massive win for climate action! DPU's groundbreaking Order 20-80-B issued today advances the clean energy future by initiating the transition away from the gas system and promoting efficient, all-electric solutions for buildings.
Acadia Center applauds the bold move by Massachusetts DPU, a crucial step towards achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 by rejecting false decarbonization solutions and promoting efficient electric solutions like heat pumps.
This marks a pivotal moment in Massachusetts’ building decarbonization strategy, through a managed transition from gas systems to electric heating/cooling solutions for homes and businesses.
As we celebrate this win for Acadia Center, its allies, and the people of Massachusetts, we're gearing up to collaborate on implementing DPU’s directives, ensuring a fair transition for communities & workers, advancing climate, affordability, and reliability goals.

Rhode Island's plan for reducing transportation emissions is misguided.
Adding more car infrastructure, rather than public transportation options that take cars off the road is not an effective solution and won't bring down emissions nearly enough to combat the impact on the climate.

Acadia Center is disappointed by the news coming out of regarding the decision on . Acadia Center research has shown RGGI is not just a great way to fight climate change, but serves as an economic engine, improves health outcomes, and can help address social inequities.
Read more about the decision here:
In response to the release of the Recommendations of the Climate Chief of yesterday, Senior Advocate and Massachusetts Program Director Kyle Murray had this to say:
What is a Clean Heat Standard? How do states benefit from a CHS? What are the key challenges in making an equitable CHS?
The latest in our Climate and Energy Information series addresses the topic of Clean Heat Standards and answers the most significant questions surrounding them.
Once upon a time, utilities in Massachusetts crafted future plans behind closed doors, without public discussion or scrutiny. Today, there's a more transparent process in place.
Thanks in part to legislation that Acadia Center originally drafted, the Grid Modernization Advisory Council now exists along side the Energy Efficiency Advisory Council, which open up the doors to the decision-making processes that shape the clean energy future.
Acadia Center is proud to have Senior Advocate and Massachusetts Program Director Kyle Murray serving on both councils, where he advises utilities on how to streamline grid modernization, make weatherization and heat pumps more accessible to consumers, and prioritize long-term planning for a distributed, renewable energy system.
These councils decide the scale and speed of decarbonization, and Acadia Center is there to ensure all citizens benefit from those decisions.

Sunday's Drive Electric Event in Portland, where our Senior Policy Advocate and Program Director, Pete LaFond volunteered to let people drive or ride in his while answering their questions alongside at least 20 other EV owners.
He spent much of his 4 hours offsetting EV misinformation people had seen online, finding that the best way to do that was to just let them drive or ride in his car.
🤓 Clean energy issues are often complicated and wonky, leaving most people in the dark when it comes to renewables, technology, and what they can do for the climate.
📖 Acadia Center is committed to keeping the public involved and informed on clean energy topics, and we're excited to launch a new series of informative handouts beginning with the divisive topic of hydrogen as an energy source. 🧐
