It’s hard to believe how close you can get with a group of people in one short week.
The teaching training program is a weeklong workshop in the art of documentary songwriting. Veteran teaching artists .a.taylor and and executive director Caroline Rex-Waller were lucky to spend this past week learning connecting and playing music with these incredible musicians.
We’re excited to keep these collaborations going with Michelle, Raph, and Hazel!
This is what one documentary songwriting session can do—shift your self perception and help you recognize what you’re capable of.
Your story matters.
Clara Schneid and Hazel Delehey. How lucky are we to have you in our community!
A DocSong Teaching Artist listens deeply to the story source, leads them through the documentary songwriting process, contributes ideas and feedback throughout the writing and arranging process, and provides songwriting expertise and perspective to ensure that the general listener might understand and feel the emotional message. This is what two Storytellers have to say about their experience with DocSong:

In the midst of fear, worry, and heartache, it can be hard to remember the best parts of this world.
Over and over we hear from our storytellers about the beauty of documentary songwriting— the gift of sitting with another person and telling your story and being listened to with someone’s full love and attention.
and so, in those moments when you feel overwhelmed, remember all these small moments of connection that are happening every day, and how much they matter.
So grateful for our collaboration with SEED Impact these last few months. Looking forward to sharing our theory of change framework and evaluation report.

After observing a recent documentary songwriting workshop led by Mimi and Malcolm at Maine Correctional Center, a staff member at the prison said, “Through song and music, the women turned what happened to them into an opportunity to find strength. I laughed. I cried, but most of all I listened.”
We are so lucky to be working with and the Immigrant Music Connection to be sharing stories of new Mainers in Portland. Jenny caught up with two of our storytellers, Embry and Lukebana, who are in the middle of writing their songs! 🎶
