"āIt is easy to mix up the labels for different types of plant-based eating,ā says Sarah Skovran, R.D.N., a vegan dietitian. āOne reason is that people aren't always consistent in the words they use to describe eating, and another reason is that there are words that sound similar but have important distinctions, like the difference between vegan and vegetarian.ā"

So I saw this meme all over the place, and thought it was great.
And then I saw comments somewhere that that date (Jan 17) is Martin Luther King Jr Day this year, and that was a conflict.
And my first thought was, "goodness, can't you hold two important things in your head and heart at one time??"
But then I realized it's none of my business what people can and cannot do, or what they choose to hold at any one time.
So. If you'd like to donate in Betty White's memory, but not on January 17, why not do it this week? I'll put some links to local places in the comments.
And if not, okay.
Maybe this is you? "I recognize all of this in the abstract. In practice, however, I struggle."
"And I am someone who knows better. I recognize all the reasons I shouldnāt do this. I recognize that the relationship between fatness and health is far from straightforward ā that many fat people are healthy and many thin people are not, that the correlation between being fat and having certain diseases is complex and generally mediated by other risk factors, including poverty and the social stigma that keeps fat people from getting the health care they deserve.
I have long admired the work of fat activists ā Marilyn Wann, Sonya Renee Taylor and Aubrey Gordon among them ā and recognize that fat bodies can be not only healthy but also athletic, beautiful, sexy. I believe in the concepts of intuitive eating and health at every size ā at least, for other people. I recognize that the vast majority of diets fail to make people any thinner or any healthier in the long term. I recognize that even if you are a fat person who would be healthier if you lost weight, you donāt owe it to anyone to do so; you donāt owe it to anyone to be healthy in general. And I know how much my internalized fatphobia owes to oppressive patriarchal forces ā the forces that tell girls and women in particular to be small, meek, slight, slim and quiet.
I recognize all of this in the abstract. In practice, however, I struggle."

Intuitive Eating for Every Day: 365 Daily Practices & Inspirations to Rediscover the Pleasures of Eating by Evelyn Tribole
I'm just going to keep sharing these messages for a while...
Each new year comes with a flurry of weight loss ads where quite often exercise (and movement more broadly) becomes conflated with weight loss.
As a consequence, these messages often reinforce a certain sense of pressure to move in a certain way at a certain intensity this time of year.
Deep down many of us know that movement can offer benefits that have nothing to do with our weight, shape, or size, but for many, it can feel difficult to decouple activity with weight due to conflicting information and messages.
So I thought this would be a good time to highlight some potential benefits that can occur from moving your body. These do differ based on different demographics and they are context-dependent, so people are likely to have different preferences and experiences (and thatās OK).
Some of these benefits include (but are not limited to):
āŖļøAn opportunity to socialise & connect with others with similar goals.
āŖļøAn opportunity to to de-stress.
āŖļøAn improvements in bone strength & density.
āŖļøA reduction in risk of many major diseases.
āŖļøAn opportunity to learn and develop new skills.
āŖļøThe potential to improve well-being.
āŖļøImprovements in cardiovascular fitness.
āŖļøImprovements in muscle strength & function.
Any type of movement at any intensity yields benefits so donāt think you have to abide by the āgo hard or go homeā mantra.
And if youāre struggling with movement or donāt feel ready to engage in activities you used to enjoy, remember thereās more to health and wellbeing than movement, so donāt fret if you need to focus on other things.
For those who do engage in some form of movement, whether itās going to the gym, going for a walk, or dancing in your kitchen whilst waiting for the kettle to boil, Iām interested to know what type you engage in and what benefits you gain from it with have nothing to do with your weight.
So please share your experience. It might be the thing that helps someone get started.
happy new year!
STOP CONFUSING HEALTH WITH WEIGHT LOSS. THEY ARE NOT THE SAME THING.

"Speaking of sourcing locally, by doing so youāll also be supporting your local economy. According to Skovran, āWhen you buy foods that are locally in season right in your local area, you are probably giving your money to people who live in your community ā or if you live in a big city, not far outside it.ā Especially since 2020, when many small local businesses were crippled by the ongoing pandemic, your local farmers (and their families) have needed your support more than ever."

There is a meme making the rounds about what to donate to a food pantry. It's very nice. I, however, recommend giving food pantries MONEY. They can make the money go further because of their higher buying power. And they know what they need, so you don't have to rely on memes and guesswork!
(I am not saying food pantries aren't grateful for your food donations or that your food donations aren't helpful. Of course they are!)
One more thing. Food pantries are great. But they do not *solve* the problems of food insecurity and hunger and poverty. Don't get me wrong: I'm not knocking food pantries. I don't know where we'd be without food pantries. But please also (not instead) consider donating to organizations that advocate for systemic changes that can make food pantries less and less necessary.
Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.

When setting boundaries on holiday talk with family members, it can be helpful to appeal to their empathy rather than their intellect. Instead of debating about the science, you might try talking to them on a human level, sharing as much of your personal experience as feels safe.

Today is the one year anniversary of a disastrous accident in surgery that left me with an open wound for over 7 months.
This accident is the reason I don't really remember the vet visit where we said goodbye to Theodore. The reason I had to close my business for 2+ months. The reason that I spent the winter in bed, taking pain medications. The reason my husband lost a ton of work hours driving me to 1-3 doctor's appointments per week. (And then sat in the car waiting, because pandemic.) The reason speed bumps made me cry. The reason I couldn't reliably sit up for video appointments until recently. The reason I still can't wear most types of waistbands. The reason I still can't swim or have a bath. The reason I still have pain, and possibly will forever.
Trauma is a funny thing. Today feels just like any other day. I have clients. I'm going to see my kid in the musical tonight. But one day last week, I saw the words "abdomen" and "burn" in the same sentence and very nearly vomited.
Not all trauma is as dramatic as this. Some trauma is much *much* more dramatic. Whatever is going on with you, please don't minimize it (to yourself or others) because you think someone else is going through something worse. You're allowed to feel like s**t and you're allowed to want help dealing with it.
Here's a sunny photo on this dreary day. Me, I'm off to my first client.
In Flanders Fields, the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
~ John McCrae, 1915

I've never taken this workshop, but it mentions hygge, so I'm in.

Oh hi. It's been a minute.
Here are my past 18 months, in a nutshell:
* pandemic = backpack program got BUSY
* relaxing summer turned into a medical situation
* closed business for 2 months as medical situation got worse
* re-opened doors to clients, got BUSY
* medical situation improved
* decided this was a good time to start a blog (?!?)
And my social media posting went womp-womp (that was a sad trombone...).
So. Here I am. I alternate between having a few openings and having no openings in my practice. If you find you're needing some help with food, please holler and we'll see what I've got!

Happy International No Diet Day!
You may know, I get a kick out of the various "days" but this one really speaks to me.
is a day to:
ā¤ļø Celebrate the beauty and diversity of ALL our natural sizes and shapes.
ā¤ļø Affirm every bodyās right to self esteem, respect, and emotional and physical well-being.
ā¤ļø Declare a one day personal moratorium on diet/weight obsession.
ā¤ļø Learn the facts about weight loss dieting, health, and body size.
ā¤ļø Recognize how dieting perpetuates violence against women, transgender people and gender non-conforming people.
ā¤ļø Honor the victims of eating disorders and weight loss surgery.
ā¤ļø Help end weight discrimination, sizism, and fat phobia.
How are you celebrating?

Hope you all are well.
