As Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) month begins, we’d like to shine a light on an incredibly special person — ’s mother, Yukiyo Moorman.

Yukiyo has spent most of her professional life teaching Japanese Language at Walt Whitman High School in Washington, D.C. Her contributions to the study of Japanese in the United States are vast — including spearheading her own reading and writing curriculum, organizing student trips with the Japanese embassy, and, most notably, developing the Japanese AP exam, which encouraged American high schools to invest in Japanese Language courses and helped students pursue university language studies.

Her lifetime of service culminated last year, when Yukiyo was presented with The Order of The Rising Sun, Japan’s highest honor conferred to civilians outside of the government or the nobility. She is the only high school teacher in America to have received this award.

An octogenarian, Yukiyo still teaches and diligently refines her coursework for the betterment of her students and the appreciation of the Japanese language.

Thank you, Yukiyo, for your decades of dedication.

We had a feeling Seven Springs Vineyard would show a predilection for Chardonnay after seeing Dominique Lafon’s excitement. One of the masters of Meursault, Dominique came to Seven Springs and pushed for a rethinking of a grape he knows quite well, not only saving historic plantings but bringing new plots to fruition.

He also identified the specific rows with shallower soil and an ideal slope that would come to make up our La Source and Summum cuvées. Nearly 20 years later, these wines give us immense gratitude for our friend’s work, and even more hope for the future of Eola-Amity Hills Chardonnay.

The 2022 vintage produced wines that remind us of Dominique’s words.

This is why Chardonnay is meant for the volcanic, east-facing hillside of Seven Springs Vineyard. To be more exact, Summum illustrates the laser-like precision from the rockier top half of 14 rows of Chardonnay planted almost three decades ago.

The wine is elegance. Ripe tree fruit, white flowers, roasted hazelnut and flint are just the entry to a cuvée of volume and delicacy, concentration and well-integrated oak in a svelte frame. It recalls the weightlessness and purity of a chiseled premier cru Meursault-Blagny.

The finish hangs on, textured and long-lasting. As is the life of this wine.

The Evening Land spring 2024 release is now available.

At the core of this release is our dedication to Chardonnays of energy, minerality and balance. These traits were prodigal in the 2022 vintage, which compressed the already short growing season in our part of the world to a cool, late harvest of immensely high quality. Over the years, many of us in the Eola-Amity Hills have seen an uptick in delicious Chardonnay. 2022 signals yet another step forward for Seven Springs Vineyard and the appellation.

In this spirit, we are also re-releasing the 2017 La Source and Summum cuvées. Hailing from a similarly special vintage with time in bottle, they show a more complete drinking experience and the evolution of Evening Land’s top white wines.

We hope these Chardonnays bring you a glimpse of the cool Pacific breezes, warm afternoon sun and Douglas fir forest that define the place where they began.

From the beginning, Raj and Sashi felt very strongly about the fact that Chardonnay had a lot of potential in Oregon. Sashi described the climate as “remarkable,” just “not at all cool.”

Unlike the blankets of fog that cover the Sta. Rita Hills, Sashi noticed the clear skies, low humidity, and incredibly bright, sunny, and above all, hot days that Oregon experiences.

“Raj and I were dumbfounded,” he laughs, recalling how their initial year in the vineyards was nothing of what they’d expected.

“It became clear to me that this is an ideal place to grow white grapes, not just Chardonnay, but white grapes in general, as you have a lot of sunlight, which is good for developing the flavors and skins,” he says, citing that short growing seasons and late bud break are also beneficial to the cultivation of white grape varieties.

This is the second vintage of our Three Mile Syrah.

The label is inspired by Japanese artist, Hokusai, a ukiyo-e painter and printmaker of the Edo period. Hokusai is best-known as author of the woodblock print series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji (c. 1831) which includes the iconic and internationally recognized print, The Great Wave off Kanagawa, created during the 1820s.

Instead of the iconic Mt. Fuji, you will see our very own Mt. Hood which you can see on a clear day.

Delicious but quite brooding now, it will be a delight later this decade and into the next, when the wine’s complexity can shine through its muscle.

This is a club member exclusive.

03/14/2024

How to describe the 2022 vintage? Seven Springs Vineyard was fortunate to see a long, wet winter dormancy and summer that culminated in our latest harvest in some time. Early on, the quality of this vintage, particularly through the lens of Chardonnay, was clear.

What makes these conditions so auspicious? Above all else; energy. In white winemaking, acidity is paramount — it’s what gives life and longevity in bottle to our Chardonnay and Chenin Blanc, both of which held incredible freshness through the slow creep of the season.

But 2022 was not for white wines alone. This vintage gave us the opportunity for less whole-cluster inclusion and Pinot Noirs that carry their tannins with grace. Matured in more new oak than years past, they will age generously, much like the more assertive, meaty Three Mile Syrah.

As our club members receive their spring offer, which will arrive in their inboxes tomorrow, we hope they enjoy it with friends, family, and food that make drinking wine such a delight.

“We wanted to work with the best site in Oregon for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. It was very clear to us, from our experience, that Seven Springs was one of the most special sites in the Willamette Valley,” explains Sashi.

What makes Seven Springs special is not only the age of the vines, which date back to the 1980s, but also its east-facing orientation. This allows the vines to receive the morning sun, followed by the sun being directly overhead.

As a result, the grapes are not subjected to excessive heat, and the unique geology of the vineyard leads to distinct characteristics in the different parcels of vines that have been planted.

Sparkling wine deserves a place on the table year-round, regardless of the season. Evening Land’s 2017 Blanc de Noirs begins with Pinot Noir grapes grown in the picturesque and dramatic la Forêt vineyard at the summit of Seven Springs.

From harvest to release this wine was raised for six years - four of those on the lees. The final two years allows the mousse to calm and the bead to tighten to a subtle and fine texture.

Unlike the cherry red color and aromas of many classic, delicious Gamays, this wine marries juicy fruit with an otherwise darker, brooding character. That fruit leaps from the glass – strawberry Bon Bon, raspberry lemonade – cut with tar, rosemary and iodine, showing substantial weight on the palate.

Almost grippy, a wave of acidity complements the tannic structure through the finish. Think of it like Beaujolais meets cool-climate, New World fruit in the best way possible. Serve slightly chilled or cellar temperature.

Our Story

At Evening Land, we grow and make Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Gamay from our historic Seven Springs Estate Vineyard in Oregon's Eola-Amity Hills. Totalling 85 acres under vine; our east-facing vineyard was first planted in 1982, and sits atop rocky, volcanic soils.

Seven Springs' location, exposure, elevation, and vine age combine to produce benchmark Oregon wines. Each Seven Springs bottling corresponds to a specific block in our vineyard. All our wines are hand crafted at our winery in Salem, OR, a short 10-minute drive south from the vineyard.

The winemaking is lead by Sashi Moorman and Raj Parr. Winemaker Ben DiCristina brings their vision of our vineyard’s potential to the bottle.

We invite you to visit our tasting room and experience the wines of Evening Land for yourself.
