We make complex, elegant and balanced wines that eloquently reflect the terroir of their vineyards. Our two vineyards vary significantly only in soil type.
VINEYARD PRACTICES
Close spacing (1,800-2,100 per acre); vertical trellis; target 2 pounds of fruit per vine; shoot thinning; leaf-pulling in fruit zone; crop dropped when necessary; dry-farmed, sustainably grown own-rooted vines. Gophers humanely and gently chased, then harnessed to electricity-generation grid (Still working on this…). Wild Winds is on reddish, volcanic Jory soil, and Walnut Ridg

We are excited to see veraison in the vineyard! This is the onset of the ripening of the grapes. The veraison of a grape is a speedy process that takes only a couple of days. However, the veraison of an entire vineyard takes place over a couple of weeks since not all grapes ripen at the same rate. Come check it out!
Come get your wine and you could be “Haulin’ Sass” too!
Good news! We’re grateful and fortunate to have won a gold, three silvers and three bronze medals at the 2024 Sommeliers Choice Awards May 21 in Chicago.
The 1,500 wines from more than 50 countries were judged for food pairing, typicity (does this pinot noir taste like pinot noir?), quality, value and packaging. All of these are available today in our tasting room or to order online!
Our winners with judges’ comments:
2016 Sass Pinot Noir, Wild Winds Vineyard: Bright red fruits and spicy notes lead to a palate with good grip and a touch of stemminess, finishing fresh and perfect for pairing with duck and cherry sauce. Gold
2022 Sass Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley: Juicy and fresh ripe strawberry aromas with savory notes lead to a light, easy palate, finishing with a hint of dusty leafiness. Silver
2022 Sass Pinot Gris, Yakima Valley: Bright citrus and fresh orchard fruit aromas lead to a balanced palate with crisp acidity, herbal tones, and a savory, complicated finish typical of Pacific Northwest Pinot Gris. Silver
2022 Sass Gamay Noir Rose: Bright and tart red fruit with bitter orange zest aromas lead to a palate with dusty road tannins and a tart, slightly bitter finish. Silver
2017 Sass Pinot Noir, Vieux Amis: Fresh aromas of ripe red fruits and oak lead to a fresh palate that pairs well with meat, finishing with a touch of bitterness. Bronze
2021 Sass Catharina (Pinot blanc, Gewurztraminer, Riesling): Membrillo paste (We had to look it up, too!), candied orange, and winter spice aromas lead to an exotic palate of sour fruit, finishing with a lingering, savory bitterness. Bronze
2021 Sass Gamay Noir: Cherry lozenge, wild strawberry, and anise aromas lead to a fresh palate, finishing juicy and balanced, with a great value for money. Bronze
