Tara and Shepard checking on baby! So wonderful to have this family with us again. đŸ„°

11/21/2023

Had one of our favorite kinds of births when a client we have helped before had us to her home again. She had to work a little longer for this her fourth baby, but she battled through the waves until she was holding her first daughter and introducing her to all three delighted big brothers. Tara and I watched with tears in our eyes, remembering our own little ones, and so very honored to be witnesses.
To life! To homebirth! To fathers kissing their wives as they labor! To mothers channeling so much strength!

We are excited to introduce to you our newest full time midwife, Melissa Dean! Some of you might recognize her from her time with us birth assisting several years back. She has since become a Certified Nurse Midwife and returned to us in that capacity. We are so very happy to have her join the team here!
More details for you here: Melissa began her nursing career in 2004 as a registered nurse here in our local community. She has dedicated her nursing career to serving women during their most transformative life experiences. Her nursing background includes Labor and Delivery, Newborn Intensive Care Unit, Postpartum Care Unit, and Adult Intensive Care Unit. Her varied experiences in healthcare have provided her with a deep understanding of the unique challenges and joys that accompany pregnancy and childbirth. She is passionate about Midwifery and believes in educating and empowering women and birthing persons to make informed decisions about their care.
She believes that every person deserves to have a voice in their healthcare journey, and it is important to her that her clients feel safe, respected, and comfortable during their time in her care. After putting her dreams of becoming a Midwife on hold while she raised her five amazing children, she graduated from Frontier Nursing University as a Certified Nurse Midwife and holds a master’s degree in nursing. She loves to be outdoors and is an avid reader and quite often combines those two activities. She plays momma bear to her 5 grown children, 4 children-in-laws, 4 fabulous grandchildren and one very large labradoodle named Oliver.

“ROWAN IS ONE!!”, she wrote us. :) “Just wanted to share a few pictures with you all. I wish I had more time to write a more full email but I just don't. Thought it was important to reach out on this beautiful day though. LOOK AT HIM!!!! My beautiful boy.” Happy birthday, love. What a woman your mama is. 🎉

Totally neglected to get photos of the birthday girl and her family coming in for her birthday to see us, find her and brother’s footprints and bring us treats after their zoo trip. So so sweet to see them being parents. đŸ„°

After so many years, we have a whole host of families who have come to us for multiple babies. They feel like family! These pictures were sent over to us this morning by one of our favorites! Mom wanted advice to give a friend she was helping for an upcoming Vbac attempt. The ripple effect of what our midwives pour into families keeps going and going! đŸ„°
Happy Sunday!

To say it was an honor to again, for a THIRD time, walk with a family through a VBAC today is a gross understatement.
Love them so

What joy it was to spend the first hours of this Nov 3 with an amazing woman having her first baby girl! All was complication-free, with the delight of how much easier a second vaginal birth is. Before the sun came up, they were on the way home to introduce big brother to his perfect baby sister —8lbs 1 and 1/2 oz. Nostalgic now thinking of the baby girl I delivered w my midwife in 2001 on Nov 3. May this new life also be blessed with joy and s***k, depth and the ability to love deeply! Happy birthday, girls! ❀Eva / mom

Don’t wipe it off! A Birth Center baby demonstrates Vernix benefits for Baby by Dr Harvey Karp

Vernix helps develop baby’s healthy gut bacteria. Your little fetus is swallowing bits of vernix every day. This helps develop the baby’s good gut bacteria and prevents infection.
Vernix helps fight off bad bacteria. Newborns have pretty weak immune systems, which makes them more susceptible to illnesses, like skin infections. Vernix keeps the skin a little more acidic, which helps slow the growth of bad bacteria.
Vernix helps keep babies warmer. Of course, you’ll wrap your baby in blankets and keep a comfortable room temperature, but vernix also helps keep babies warm by reducing evaporation of water through the skin, which can cool the baby too much.
Vernix moisturizes a baby’s skin. Vernix is the richest skin cream
ever. It contributes to the unbelievably smooth and delicious skin babies have at birth.

“A beautiful birth, on a beautiful autumn day. What a privilege to witness this family today. The pictures speak for themselves: the view from the birth room during the final hours of labor, mom and partner working together in unity and love with this photo taken just minutes before the birth, and the littlest older brother (who has been to every prenatal appt and helped measure the belly and listen to the baby every time) representing The Birth Center with pride. This mama gave birth today with both power and grace, surrounded by family, older siblings, and friends. Her third baby and first birth outside the hospital and unmedicated, and she can't stop talking about how much better it was for her. A sweet and restful first night to this awesome family.” 2015 memories 🍂

This

We are often asked, my first birth was challenging, will it be the same this time?

Many find their subsequent births to be more manageable. It's like the firstborn leaves a guide for the siblings to follow. There are rare exceptions, typically tied to past soft tissue traumas, possibly from early years or between pregnancies.

Another potential hurdle is the combination of a large baby and a notably compact pelvis. A posterior or asynclitic baby can also lead to extended labor. In such cases, focusing on body balance can make a world of difference.

Pairing our Daily Activities with a wholesome pregnancy diet can further optimize your labor experience.

No matter your previous birth journey—be it cesarean, vacuum, spontaneous, breech, or posterior baby—you have the power to cultivate better balance, nutrition, and support for an empowering birth experience.

Approach the upcoming birth with optimism and courage. The beauty of labor is truly unparalleled!

Our 7th October baby came Tuesday morning! 🎉
After only a couple hours of regular contractions, these first time parents headed our way. On the drive, it was readily apparent baby was coming NOW. They pulled into our parking space and welcomed their daughter into the world and their Subaru! Tara and family wheeled them into the birth center in our wheelchair and a peaceful postpartum time was had! They are thinking a homebirth might be their choice next time. ;)
CONGRATULATIONS!!
