From now through April 29, we'll be accepting donations for our supply drive to Black Mesa! While shearing sheep at different home sites, we'll drop off boxes of supplies. Please send us or Thistle & Burr a direct message for the drop-off location.
We'll accept donations of fresh produce on April 28-29. We can accept shelf-stable goods at any time through April 29.
Thank you so much for any support you can offer! This is a very remote, high-desert community where residents are mainly elders and getting around isn't always easy, so it will be much appreciated.
Mama Julz is a true climate justice warrior, and now she is working to bring a long-term dream to fruition: the creation of a detox and healing center that will provide a safe space for recovery with culturally appropriate treatment for those suffering from addiction. This center will be for Indigenous people living on Pine Ridge in so-called South Dakota who are suffering from addiction. She aims to create a straw bale house, yurt platforms, and gardens; a crew of skilled builders will be convening to carry out the work. Please contribute to this incredibly important effort!

In early May, a group of us from SLC will go to Black Mesa to help with sheep shearing, in the spirit of solidarity with elders who have defended the land from coal mining for many decades. We aim to bring a load of supplies down as well, for Dine elders and families living in this remote high desert area. Please donate to help us bring things like food, shearing equipment, animal feed, and other necessities! We truly appreciate any support you can offer. If donating, please make a note saying it's for the Black Mesa trip. Thank you!

"Two Songs," a poem by Victor Puertas
They chanted a song of lying, of stabbing, of hating, of treachery, of revealing, of accusing, of replacing him, removing him, of disposing of him, of betraying, of punishing, of using him, of misleading him, of scapegoating him, of burying him.
Then suddenly Coyote sang in answer a song of staying, resisting, of secrets kept, of self-respect, of battling against power, of loyalty, of softness, of strength like a tower and trust unbroken, of freedom, of changing and of shifting shape, broken traps, the cell opening, the chain that snaps, the heart that doesn’t lie and doesn’t bow.
Too old to die young now. Coyote lives forever.

On Sunday, family and loved ones of Victor came together to celebrate his birthday and demand his release from ICE detention. We will not stop fighting for Victor til he's back in Utah, where he belongs!
Yesterday, Victor's friends, family, and loved ones gathered in Salt Lake City, Utah to celebrate his birthday and call for his release. Today is Victor's birthday, and while we are terribly sad that he has to spend it behind bars, we know that he knows we are with him all the way--as are all his friends and loved ones across the U.S. We are a strong community whose love is deep and enduring, and we won't stop fighting for Victor til he's back with us, where he belongs!
Reposted from Carl Moore--thank you for blessing this gathering. ❤️ And thank you to First Unitarian Church of Salt Lake City for offering your space for this event!

Stand up for Victor, demanding that he be freed! He has done nothing wrong. He deserves to return to his loved ones in Utah and visit the mountains he misses so much. Keeping him in a cage is a great injustice that urgently needs to be remediated. Our hearts are with you, Victor!
Today, clergy members took a powerful stand to call for the release of Victor Puertas--a beloved member of our local community in Utah and many others. Victor's commitment to caring for others and the earth has brought support from far and wide to call for his release from ICE detention. Victor should be released IMMEDIATELY!

Julz Rich is the powerhouse behind MAMA—the Mothers Against M**h Alliance, which is working to combat the m**h epidemic on Pine Ridge Reservation and get kids out of the hands of drug dealers. She’s the real deal—a grassroots organizer working to defend her community from human trafficking, drug addiction, and colonial resource extraction. And she gives everything she has to the struggle.
She’s also a mother and grandmother. Julz just had to spend more than two weeks in Rapid City with her daughter, who had an emergency cesarean section. Her twins were born a month early. They’re all finally able to go home, thankfully, but the family can use some financial support after this ordeal. If you can contribute anything, it will help with getting gas and oil in the car to get them home safely and to allow Julz to continue doing the crucial work she does in her community! 🙏
Jackson Patton should be released so he can return to his family immediately! Please email the judge and urge him to make the right decision.

We are selling some posters--aka, gorgeous works of collaborative art--that were graciously donated by the Beehive Collective! All proceeds will be given to Dine elders in the Four Corners region and a migrant family in SLC, to support their essential needs this holiday season. We're collaborating with Red de Solidaridad to raise funds for this migrant family, which will support needs like rent and food.

At Black Mesa, the federal government considers many people trespassers on their ancestral homeland. Many of the resisters who have refused to relocate to make way for Peabody Coal’s mine are now elders, having fought this battle since the ‘70s. Now, the community of Black Mesa needs our support to weather both the pandemic and winter.
That’s why in both Salt Lake City and Logan, Utah, we’re collecting supplies that members of the community have requested.
At 8,000 feet, winter in this high desert landscape can be extremely cold and difficult. Travel can be hard and often out of the question. We aim to bring supplies down to the Black Mesa community before the cold weather hits, at the beginning of November.
Here is a list of requests. If you’re able to donate, you can either purchase the items and bring them to a drop-off site, or donate funds toward their purchase. We are also accepting firewood!

Please direct-message us for a drop-off location in SALT LAKE CITY or LOGAN, Utah, or email [email protected]. Thank you so much!
From Decarcerate Utah:
We're very excited to announce the Salt Lake Community Bail Fund! With this fund, we hope to meet an immediate need in our community and help folks who can't afford their bail to get out of jail as soon as possible. Built on an abolitionist framework, we will also work to expose the injustices of pre-trial detention and end the cash bail system in Utah.
Please join us in supporting our community members! No one should be held in a cage because they are unable to pay.
Make a tax-deductible donation at slcbailfund.org/donate.
SLC Community Bail Fund We believe the cash bail system is cruel and unjust. Any time spent in jail can be detrimental to someone’s well-being—even more so in a pandemic.
