Independence Day signifies more than just a holiday—it's a celebration of freedom and second chances for the animals we rescue. Just as nations celebrate their freedom, we honour our rescued animals' journey towards a life of safety, companionship, and the opportunity to rediscover their natural behaviours.

This Independence Day, let us celebrate their stories of resilience and the joy of living freely.

More than a quarter of the elephants currently in our care have severely diminished eyesight or are completely blind. These elephants were abused, neglected and nearly worked to death, but kind supporters like you stepped up to give them hope. Will you please join our amazing group of monthly donors and adopt our blind elephants? We’ve even got an awesome limited edition Wildlife SOS beanie as a “thank you” gift!

Did you know train accidents are a major threat to wild elephants in India?

Baby Bani arrived at the Elephant Hospital Campus with a grave prognosis. Hit by a speeding train and separated from her herd, Bani fought to survive.
With precise care from our expert team, national as well as international experts, Bani has shown incredible determination to heal and walk again, even though her feet still drag.

However, this wasn’t an isolated incident. 186 elephants have died from train collisions in the past decade! We need to STOP these unnecessary tragedies.

Support us in imploring the Indian Railways to reduce speeds in wildlife corridors and take measures to protect wild animals from train accidents by signing this petition: https://wildlifesos.org/trains

Moon Bear Day celebrates the most bipedal of the bear species --the Asiatic black bear!

Distinguished by the white crescent on its chest, which gives it the name "moon bear," this species is known for its playful nature and primarily vegetarian diet. Unfortunately, it’s listed as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, facing significant threats from deforestation, habitat fragmentation, and poaching for traditional medicine.

Wildlife SOS's rescue centers in Jammu and Kashmir provide rehabilitation to rescued Asiatic black bears while facilitating ex-situ conservation. We are dedicated to advancing research on the species and raising awareness about their conservation while tackling human-wildlife conflicts.

Lets zoom in on the Asiatic black bear and uncover fascinating facts about this remarkable creature!

It's National Watermelon Day!

Our resident animals love juicy, refreshing watermelon just as much as we do!

For our elephants, a bucket of watermelon slices while they lounge in the water is a highlight of the day. Meanwhile, our bears use their long claws to gouge out the juicy insides and savour each mouthful.

This national Watermelon Day, donate these sweet, juicy and hydrating treats for our resident animals: https://give.wildlifesos.org/page/135182/donate/1

Baby Bani, with her adorable hairdo, is sending out big smiles and even bigger thanks to all our wonderful sponsors!

Bani shows signs of healing through her mischievous conduct that she has slowly begun to reveal. Our team is always smiling looking at her mischief.

Capturing this picture was no easy feat! Our photographer had to be incredibly quick, as Bani loves to play hide-and-seek with the camera. While she has made clicking charming portraits a majestic task, her childlike expressions are simply too cute to ignore! Your support has made a huge difference to Bani’s life and we are ever so grateful for your love for Bani.

In a collaborative rescue and release operation with the Chief Wildlife Warden, Delhi, and the Deputy Conservator of Forests, Central Division Delhi, the Delhi Forest Department conducted a raid in the bustling Jama Masjid market, resulting in the rescue of over 700 native birds, primarily various species of Indian parakeets!

Wildlife SOS collaborated closely in this operation, ensuring the birds received immediate care and eventual release back into their natural habitat.

The raid led to the seizure of over 700 birds including rose-ringed parakeet, alexandrine parrot, plum-headed parakeet, black-headed munia and scaly-breasted munia. These birds, found crammed in deplorable conditions, were swiftly taken into custody by the authorities. Our team worked tirelessly to nurse the birds back to health, ensuring proper nutrition to the rescued avians. Subsequently, the birds were carefully released into a suitable natural habitat, marking a successful conclusion to a crucial rescue operation!

Employees at the substation office of Maharashtra State Electricity Board were shocked when they discovered a leopard inside the premises. Acting swiftly, they contacted the forest department who then reached out to Wildlife SOS for support.

The rescue operation, which lasted approximately 2.5 hours, involved carefully sedating the leopard to ensure the safety of both the animal and the people involved. There have been numerous cases of human-wildlife conflict over the years in Maharashtra due to many reasons such as habitat loss and fragmentation, poaching, illegal trade, etc. To fight this, our team in addition to rescuing these animals from conflict situations also conducts awareness sessions regularly on how to mitigate conflicts and navigate potential encounters with wildlife conflict.

Our Story

At Wildlife SOS, we focus on protecting India’s wild animals in their natural habitats as well as on rescuing and caring for orphaned, injured and exploited wildlife. We operate two rescue centers for elephants, five for bears, one for leopards, and one for birds and primates.

From our humble start nearly 25 years ago, Wildlife SOS has grown to be one of the premier wildlife rescue organizations in the world.

In 2009, after more than a decade of hard work, we ended the centuries-old practice of “dancing bears” in India. We are still caring for hundreds of sloth bears that were rescued from that cruel industry.

In 2014, we rescued Raju, an elephant who cried when our team came to save him. Raju’s heartbreaking story went viral online, and introduced our work to millions of people across the globe.
