GENERAL ASSEMBLY DAY 2

General Session III of this year's all virtual General Assembly took place yesterday, June 21. The session began with opening words from Rev. JeKaren Olaoya.

Results of Day 1 voting was announced. There were five ballots voted on during Day 1: two Article II Amendments and three Actions of Immediate Witness. As a reminder, Article II is the section of the UUA Bylaws that currently contain our denomination's 7 principles. The proposal is to replace the principles with what is called Shared Values. The first two ballots from Day 1 had to do with the Shared Value of Equity. Ballot one proposed the following language: "We declare that every person is inherently worthy and has the right to flourish with dignity, love, and compassion" - this proposal passed. Ballot two proposed the following language: "Equity calls us to listen, understand, respect, and respond to one another" - this proposal did not pass. The last three ballots introduced this year's Actions of Immediate Witness (AIW) which are calls for social action within the denomination. The vote was whether or not to place the AIWs on the agenda for further discussion and approval. The three AIWs are: (1) Centering Love Amidst the Ongoing Impact of COVID-19 (2) Solidarity with Palestinians (3) World on Fire: Humanitarian Aid and Climate Change. All three proposals passed.

General Session III continued with a reflection and report from UUA President, Rev. Sofia Betancourt and a report from the UUA Board of Trustees.

Discussions were held on four different proposed amendments: (1) a proposed Article II amendment: "We dedicate ourselves to peaceful conflict resolution at all levels. We covenant to promote a peaceful world community with liberty and human rights for all. Whenever and wherever possible we will support non-violent means to achieve peace." (2) another proposed Article II amendment: "We search for truth and meaning, informed by reason, evidence, and the results of science, motivated by wonder, curiosity, and compassion. We covenant to listen to and respect the views of others and to remain open to new ideas." (3) a proposed bylaw change regarding the number of members required on the Religious Education Credentialing Committee and (4) a business resolution entitled "Affirming Transgender, Nonbinary, Intersex, and Gender Diverse People as a Fundamental Expression of UU Religious Values".

Reports were presented by the UU Service Committee and the UU Women's Federation and closing words were presented by Rev. Justine Sullivan.

General Session IV will take place today, June 22 at 1:30pm CST at https://www.uua.org/ga/off-site/2024/business/iv

GENERAL ASSEMBLY DAY 1 (cont)

General Session II took place yesterday. It began with opening words, credentials/quorum info, and a proposal to the bylaws regarding the number of members allowed on the RE Credentialing Committee. This bylaw change was thought to be non-controversial and able to be voted on without any discussion. However, enough delegates made their objection to this known, so the bylaw change will be officially placed on the agenda and discussed/voted on later in the schedule. Rev. Natalie Fenimore presented a reflection followed by a presentation from the Bylaws Renewal Team. They will be working on further UUA Bylaw revisions in the coming year and there will be opportunities for involvement in the future. The next order of business was discussion of two phrases in the Equity section of the proposed Article II Amendments: (1) We declare that every person is inherently worthy and has the right to flourish with dignity, love, and compassion (2) Equity calls us to listen, understand, respect, and respond to one another. Discussion about these revisions took place. Lastly, three proposed Actions of Immediate Witness (AIW) were presented. These are topics that need immediate action from UUA congregations. They are: (1) Centering Love Amidst the Ongoing Impact of COVID-19 (2) Solidarity with Palestinians (3) World on Fire: Humanitarian Aid and Climate Change. A vote was held last night on whether to add these AIWs to the agenda to be discussed at a later time. The full text of the AIWs can be found at https://www.uua.org/action/process/aiw

The session concluded with closing words.
