Join us for the opening of our Fall 2023 Hudson Showroom exhibition featuring resident alumnae artist, Kathy Vargas with an exhibition of her new photography that points a lens on global commerce and cultural values pertaining to labor.
The exhibition titled "Shopping for Bargains/My Mother Taught Me to Shop" will show collages of fast fashion “bargain” clothing from around the world, with a focus on Asia, exploring the unchecked consumerism of the world clothing trade and the normalization of overindulgence. According to Vargas, “The images focus on the beauty of clothing and the seduction of shopping, even when we’re guilty of conspicuous consumerism.”

Sandra Brewster's Artpace exhibition, "Lullaby for Birdland" features an interactive seawall, a homage to one in her parents' Guyana. While the Guyanese sea wall is covered in advertisements from businesses (as seen in the gallery video), symbolizing the way capitalism can infringe on people’s ability to lead free and sustainable lives, the recreated seawall in the gallery mimics images of the land through flowers and greenery.

On the gallery floor in Aeron Bergman & Alejandra Salinas's exhibition, "Freedom," a stack of posters pays homage to the late Félix González-Torres, who served as an Artpace Resident in 1995 and has long inspired Bergman and Salinas.
In the same studio once used by González-Torres, Bergman and Salinas draw inspiration from his legacy. Influenced by his text 1990: LA and commitment to connecting people amid trauma, they contribute an essay to the exhibition. Like González-Torres' posters, their essay explores the exhibition's layers, addressing challenges in a profit-driven world that prioritizes the economy over our ecosystem.

In Alexandra Robinson's Artpace exhibition, nestled in the center of a stack of stones stands a figural-like frame draped in a cape created with a cyanotype exterior and ribbons along the interior, titled "After Cōātlīcue."
This figure mirrors Columbia, the female representation of America, famously represented in John Gast’s “American Progress,” which depicts the idea of Manifest Destiny and American westward expansion. Additionally, the figure takes inspiration from the Virgin of Guadalupe, who wore a blue mantle of stars as she directed Juan Diego to fill his cape with roses, which, when opened, fell to the floor in her likeness.

The technique of incorporating terms within a larger word to form a recurrent phrase traces its origins back to Joe Harjo’s experiences during his school days. In those formative years, he was often tasked with the demanding punishment of repeatedly writing a sentence. However, after countless iterations, Harjo discovered that the words ceased to hold their intended significance. Instead of becoming more deeply ingrained, they transformed. What was once a simple exercise became more like creating a drawing than serving as a disciplinary task.

𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗦 𝗪𝗘𝗘𝗞 | Join us for the opening of our Fall 2023 Resident Artist exhibitions! In her multimedia installation, "this land is my land \ this land is your land," Alexandra Robinson delves into complex themes of land, place, and belonging. A deliberate arrangement of stones carries layers of history and notions of land ownership. A figure draped in a cyanotype cape stands among the stones, evoking iconic symbols of America’s westward expansion and the Virgin of Guadalupe. A constructed flag outside the window and an ombre-painted gallery wall create a multi-dimensional experience, while a distorted video and intricate audio offer a profound reflection on familiarity and understanding. Robinson’s installation ultimately underscores the intricate relationship between people and the land, emphasizing the fluid and boundless nature of both.

𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗦 𝗪𝗘𝗘𝗞 | Join us for the opening of our Fall 2023 Resident Artist exhibitions! Sandra Brewster's installation, "Lullaby of Birdland," artfully unites people and places. The installation features five striking panels featuring four individuals from San Antonio in everyday, unscripted moments using a gel transfer technique that imparts notions of history and memory. Additionally, a panel depicting Eagle Pass, the Kickapoo Traditional Tribe's home, adds further historical depth. A seawall replica from Guyana, the artist's parents' homeland, offers a personal and practical connection, juxtaposed with business advertisements seen in the video piece, symbolizing capitalism's encroachment on the area. This exhibit bridges personal history, global dynamics, and the human experience, inviting visitors to transcend conventional notions of time and place.
