Researchers receive $2+ million grant to study acupuncture in emergency departments

When we first visited Cuba for an international acupuncture conference in 2000, our host, Dr. Marcos Diaz Mastellari, a leading Cuban acupuncturist, described how acupuncture was fundamental in rescuing the Cuban health care system during the Special Period. In the early and mid 90s, when there were scarce medical resources in provincial hospitals, acupuncture was effectively and successfully harnessed to treat patients in the ER, including those suffering from pneumonia and other acute illnesses that ordinarily required pharmaceutical intervention.

A few, progressive, integrative medicine doctors are taking a small, but radical step, adding acupuncture services for pain management in the ERs of three U.S. medical centers. It's not too soon for acupuncture to become part of primary and first line emergency medical care.

The Social Life of Forests

Eat Mushrooms to Nurture Life and Heal the Planet

Decades of research and study about the subterranean life of old growth forests reveals, without a doubt, that the fine filaments of fungi establish and maintain a healthy, life sustaining and life promoting symbiosis with forest flora, especially trees.. The miles of extensively complex networks of fungal rhizomata live upon and connect the root systems of trees in well-established forest eco systems.

According to some biologists and mycologists, all plants and fungi may have evolved together enabling each other to “green” the terrestrial Earth. The largest single organism so far identified was the underground rhizome complex of single fungus that covered 40 acres in a Michigan forest. It turns out that fungi probably connect all living organisms that have their roots in the ground. And, so it seems, all human societies and civilizations depend utterly on the hidden lives of fungal systems.

Edible fungi have an esteemed reputation, not only among Indigenous American tribes, but also in the annals of ancient Chinese herbal healers. In fact, the earliest published article known to be written about a single herbal agent in the millennial history of Chinese Pharmaceutics – according to linguist and translator of ancient Chinese medical literature, Paul Unschuld – is a monograph on the nature, characteristics and properties of Ganoderma lucidum, AKA Ling Zhi.

One of the explanations given by ancient Chinese physicians for the valuable, life giving and life extending power of fungi like Ling Zhi, is that, because fungi are able to transform dead matter into a healthy substrate (soil) for plants, they exert the same power inside our human bodies, turning waste products and toxins into healthy raw material for generating the Qi and Blood enabling us to survive and thrive. Non-toxic, edible fungi, many with potent health promoting and medicinal properties like Ganoderma , Shiitake, Maitake , Cordyceps and Lion’s Mane - there are scores more – are readily available in your local natural food store, herbal pharmacy and maybe even popping up in your garden or neighborhood park, especially around old pine and oak trees. Wherever you find acorns, you’re likely to spot edible mushrooms. But use a good guide to identification before you eat them, just to make sure.
