Our nonprofit is a big collaboration of fishermen, seafood businesses and environmental organizations who have come together to celebrate and promote the positive story of West Coast groundfish, and put rockfish, sole, lingcod and black cod back on menus.
Happy Labor Day everyone!!! Enjoy the sun + waves this weekend 😎
Anytime we’re in Santa Barbara, we know where we’re headed for our fresh fish fix 🤙
Plain and simple, a west coast staple 🤘
Rockfish is the perfect canvas for whatever flavor you’re feelin on a given day. Whole fried or grilled, filleted into tacos or ceviche or a perfectly juicy fish sandwich, rockfish covers all bases for a flavorful white meat fish.
No more tilapia needed 😉
Best fish n chips in Washington? Potentially…

Weekend shenanigans 🪁 🏄 🌊
Here is a great reminder to eat more fish for your lean protein when wanting to improve your overall health. While eating chicken breast can be pretty high in protein (80%), as soon as you eat it with the skin on or you eat other fattier parts of the chicken like drumsticks, the protein content drops to a mere 48% of total calories (with the other 52% accounted for by fat).
Petrale Sole, on the other hand is exceptionally high in protein, low in fat and calories. At 95% of total calories from protein, Petrale Sole is an incredible protein that should be incorporated in your diet if you’re trying to optimize protein intake. And it cooks up real quick in just a few minutes, making this the ultimate healthy “fast food.”
Stay protein-savvy. 💪
A welcome sight after a long day on the water 👌
Full plates 🙌 Anytime we’re passing through Mill Valley, stopping here is mandatory. For those of you who live close by, we’re jealous 😎
Sanddabs are a favorite for local seafood lovers all along the West Coast! It’s pretty hard to find them anywhere other than a waterfront fish market or a restaurant menu, so if you see them, get as many as you can fit in your fridge (or tummy)!!!

The InterContinental San Diego is changing the game when it comes to prominent hotels serving local seafood. We know it’s not always the easiest option to buy from local fishermen; the existing supply chain is set up for quantity over quality, which is a shame.
Enter their Food & Bev Director Jeff Josenhans with his decades of time on and under the water! Jeff brings a wealth of knowledge to an establishment like the InterContinental, and works tirelessly to ensure that his staff and guests are made aware of what amazing seafood San Diego has to offer 🎣

While ground beef can be part of a healthy diet, there are much better options when it comes to consuming protein rich foods. Most of us may think that ground beef is a good source of protein however, it is fairly low in protein per 100 calories at under 7 grams! Ground beef also contains a good amount of fat which can add up when consuming over 4 oz of it. This is where ground fish species truly shine such as dover sole, rockfish, and lingcod. These species pack on over triple the amount of protein per 100 calories than ground beef does! Another perk is that each of these species are low in fat which is a win-win!
A lil simple fish & chip perfection from our friends in Shelter Cove, California 🙌🤙🤤
Heck of a view for a fish market! Well, it’s also an amazing restaurant, and there’s no better place to appreciate the bustling working waterfront that is Newport, Oregon 🙌
Petrale sole gravlax on a bagel! Doesn’t get much tastier than this colorful, insanely flavorful meal!
Curing fish at home is an easy way to extend the fridge life of your fish and show off your seafood skills! With a different flavor profile than hot or cold smoked fish, gravlax is a great way to top a bagel, add to a seacuterie board, or even incorporate into a salad 🥗🐟🤤 🥯
Hard to beat weekend views like this!
Anytime we see these at a fish market, they’re in the bag and on the way to our fridge before you can say thorny!
These fish, long spine thornyheads, are wildly popular in overseas and domestic Asian markets. If only more people on the west coast knew about these lil guys and appreciated the myriad ways you can prepare them, maybe we’d see them more frequently in fish markets and on menus!
Ask for local seafood wherever you buy fish, raw or prepared; it really does make a difference!
Groundfish species are great sources of Vitamin D, a nutrient many Americans are deficient in. So let’s have a look at why it’s such an important nutrient:
Essential for Bone Health
-Calcium Absorption: Vitamin D is crucial for the absorption of calcium in the intestines, which is vital for bone formation and maintenance.
Supports Immune Function
- Immune System Regulation: Vitamin D plays an important role in modulating the immune system and enhancing the pathogen-fighting effects of monocytes and macrophages — white blood cells that are important parts of the immune defense.
Mood and Mental Health
Mood Regulation: Adequate levels of vitamin D are linked to improved mood and mental health, and low levels have been associated with a higher risk of depression.
Forms of Vitamin D
-Vitamin D2 (Ergocalciferol): Found in some plants and fungi.
- Vitamin D3 (Cholecalciferol): Found in animal-based foods and synthesized in the skin from sunlight. It is more effective than D2 at raising blood levels of vitamin D.
Recommended Intake
- Varies by Age and Condition:The recommended dietary allowance (RDA) for vitamin D varies by age, s*x, and life stage:
- Adults (19-70 years): 600 IU (15 mcg) per day
- Adults over 70: 800 IU (20 mcg) per day
- Pregnant and breastfeeding women: 600 IU (15 mcg) per day
Sources of Vitamin D
Sunlight: The body synthesizes vitamin D when the skin is exposed to sunlight, specifically UVB rays.
- Dietary Sources: Foods rich in vitamin D include fish (rockfish and black cod), fortified dairy products, egg yolks, and mushrooms exposed to sunlight.
Incorporating seafood sources of vitamin D can help increase levels and help maintain a healthy diet!

Mom has been at it again, and crocheted a Petrale Sole. 😍 😁

We know what’s hitting our grill today! WHOLE ROCKFISH 🤘
Time to head down to your trusted fishmonger to grab some fish for the holiday weekend!!! 🇺🇸
Yeah… that’s a rockfish grilled cheese 😎 Made this for a grilled cheese competition a couple years back, didn’t win, but have definitely recreated this recipe a few times. Just might make it tonight… 🤤
Adios, June Gloom — hello, summer!

Screengrabs from our feature of enlightening us all on the topic of dry aging fish 🤙
We’ve all heard about dry aged beef, and maybe even dry aged tuna. But there are plenty of other species, like our groundfish buddies, that hold up just as well in the dry ager! If you haven’t tried dry aged rockfish… it’s otherworldly.
Protein powder can be a convenient way to get some extra protein in, but have you read the ingredients on the back of the canister? Most protein powders we find in stores contain low quality protein sources, additives, gums, and fillers that can disrupt our gut.
Next time you want a quick way to get some extra protein in, why not meal prep some high quality groundfish such as dover sole, rockfish, or lingcod? They cook up in under 10 minutes and are trustworthy sources of protein that only contains 1 ingredient! Ditch the conventional protein powders for more nutrient dense protein sources from your local groundfish species! 💪
🙌 FATHER’S DAY SEACUTERIE BOARD 🤯
Let’s make this a tradition, shall we?? Close up of black cod rillettes for the dip of all dips with health benefits and flavor out the w***o!
