Ever wondered what Muir Woods is like after the park closes?🌙🦉🌲Join us *THIS THURSDAY* on a free evening tour to explore what keeps the redwood forest awake when we go to sleep. Step outside your comfort zone and into the ancient, nocturnal setting of Muir Woods for this two-hour, two-mile walk.

After all, we're only visitors in a place where countless animals call home - and many are crepuscular (active at dusk and dawn) or fully nocturnal (active at night). By learning about what animals are in the forest—and when—we can better understand how to protect and appreciate the whole ecosystem!

While the program is free, entry to Muir Woods is $15 per person and free for those under the age of 16.

Un-bee-lieveable find!🐝🐝🐝 The Tamalpais Bee Lab has spotted a rare bee that hasn’t been documented in Marin for over 40 years: the San Francisco leaf-cutter bee (Trachusa gummifera)🐝🍃🎉

The species didn’t turn up in our initial surveys to inventory Marin’s wild bees—the work of our Tamalpais Bee Lab community science program—so the Bee lab designed a search party to try to find it and were successful!

Now, our scientists can learn more about this special species’ ecology. It’s hopeful news for Mt. Tamalpais’ biodiversity, and for other species that could still be out there.

To learn more about the San Francisco leaf-cutter bee please visit onetam.org/tamalpais-bee-lab.

The One Tam partnership mobilizes the resources of the Parks Conservancy, Golden Gate National Recreation Area, Marin Water , Marin County Parks, and Mount Tamalpais State Park to ensure a vibrant future for Mt. Tamalpais.💚

📷 : This photo is one of the first images ever taken of the San Francisco leaf-cutter bee (Trachusa gummifera) in its entirety. The bee had not been seen for decades before One Tam’s community science program found it in Marin County in 2024. This photo was taken by a professional biologist. The Parks Conservancy partnered with the Boys & Girls Club of the Coastside this week to throw an amazing, nature-themed field day for a group of 60 fourth and fifth graders. Each activity offered bilingual programming and a fun naturalist twist, like the game “Survive or Thrive,” where students learned how climate and human impact can help or hurt our native endangered species. Roars of laughter could be heard in all directions, along with the excited sounds of our young, future environmental leaders learning more about the ecosystems they inhabit.

Make a difference in the parks you love! Support community, connection, and native ecosystems by becoming a Golden Gate Keeper 🌱 🌁 : https://secure.parksconservancy.org/site/SPageNavigator/2024SummerCampaign.html?autologin=true&s_src=2024_Summer&s_subsrc=social_7_july&utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=2024_summer

Golden Gate Keepers play a crucial role in ongoing projects in our national parks, like the restoration of Black Point historic gardens at Fort Mason. Here, a vibrant community of volunteers, students, and organizations bring the gardens to life every day.

Volunteers remove invasive plants, establish drought-tolerant native species, and survey native bees. K-12 students and adults alike use the gardens as an outdoor classroom, studying ecology and connecting with nature.

The American Indian Cultural District and their network of volunteers establish and tend plants chosen through thousands-years-old cultural traditions and sacred practices.

In a world that often feels isolating, fast-paced, and beyond our control, these gardens offer a powerful antidote. Now, more than ever, we need spaces like Black Point historic gardens.

By joining as a Golden Gate Keeper, you’ll make a difference in the health, wellbeing, and joy of many communities in our parks and help us activate sites like Black Point historic gardens for generations to come.

Today is Juneteenth! 158 years ago on June 19, 1865, Union troops arrived to Galveston Bay, Texas, to deliver news of freedom to nearly 250,000 enslaved Black Americans. It was nearly two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued.

Last weekend, the Parks Conservancy and attended the Juneteenth community celebration put on by the Tiburon Diversity Inclusion Taskforce, featuring world-renowned drummer Harold Jones, the Buffalo Soldiers motorcycle club and their horses, poetry, coffee and Tanzanian food, and more!

We are reflecting on and celebrating the achievements and contributions made by Black individuals and communities throughout history and are grateful for opportunities to come together in community to celebrate. The Parks Conservancy remains an ally for equity and continues to seek to create positive and transformative experiences for all people in our parks and open spaces.

Photo via our Golden Gate Raptor Observatory: Cooper's Hawks are becoming increasingly more common in urban and suburban areas. One of the reasons for this is due to the rise in popularity in placing songbird feeders, which then become buffet tables for Coops!

Keep an eye out for your neighborhood Coop. You may just see one nesting in a tree nearby!

OK, so a sea lion walks* onto Alcatraz Island. No big deal, right? Sea lions and seals are the most frequently observed marine mammals in the GGNRA. But earlier this year, Golden Gate National Recreation Area biologist Lidia D’Amico spotted a strange site on the island: this pup, alone, all the way up on Alcatraz’s rocky shores—a hard place for any mammal to be, let alone a juvenile sea lion.

What happened next is a story of partnership, resiliency, one very large crate, and a wild interspecies ferry ride—read all about it! https://bit.ly/3KxxVgp

Thank you to our friends at The Marine Mammal Center who help make this and many other happy stories possible. 🦭💙

Fun Fact: Did you know that, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), sea lions are able to bring all four flippers underneath their bodies and “walk” on them?!
