A day to honor our environment and natural resources, Happy World Nature Conservation Day!

In an effort to contribute to environmental preservation, there are several ways to enjoy this lovely day such as joining or supporting local Conservation organizations, participating in beach clean ups, being mindful of your water usage, and the age-old Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!

FACT: In approximately the first 50 years, the Endangered Species Act has just recently been documented to have saved 99% of species listed as close to extinction.

Celebrating the International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem!

Though mangroves are prolific ecosystems supporting communities and marine life, they are under threat as a result of deforestation and pollution. In the past 40 years, Mangrove forests have decreased by a half and continue to shrink 3-5 times faster than global forest losses according to UNESCO.

What can you do to help?
Research the importance of Mangroves
Make sustainable choices
Learn more about restoration

The IOFF commits itself to raising awareness about conservation and global platform for ocean literacy and education

Did you also know it was World Shark Awareness Day!

One of the ocean’s fiercest predators, sharks are essential to marine life. They ensure the biodiversity of the ocean. Even with their importance, they are close to extinction due primarily to overfishing and being killed for their fins. Now, more than ever, is the time to educate and participate in their conservation.

07/14/2024

Happy World Orca Day!

Also known as “Killer Whales,” Orcas have a strong impact on the functioning of the ecosystem as they are top of the food chain and control the population of marine life. As such, their conservation is vital as it provides an indication of the health of the ocean’s biodiversity.

The Blue Quest: Palawan 04/12/2024

In 2012, a retired French couple began restoring a small, devastated island in the Philippines’ Palawan UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, planting thousands of trees and mangroves and rebuilding reefs. Their Sea Academy spreads knowledge of the Reserve’s crucial food and economic importance for the local population. In a different way, “Mama Ranger” and the young rangers and scientists of reserve’s isolated Tubatahah reefs, share what they learn of the area’s wildlife with local fishermen and visiting divers.

Haulout 04/11/2024

Walruses of the Chukchi Sea north of the Bering Strait need breaks––haulouts––now and then, but global warming has melted the ice floes they once used to rest and give birth. The result: up to 100,000 walruses including young calves one night crowd into the planet’s largest haulout, startling Russian marine biologist, Maxim Chakilev, who monitors the site every year. Hundreds are crushed in their overcrowded panic.
