"Careful listening and observing can help you figure out how to make your mentee shine," coached TechWomen mentor Nancy Hendrickson, during our 2023 TechWomen delegation journey to Kazakhstan.

The best TechWomen mentors are not the most experienced engineers, the most-published researchers or the savviest CEOs in their field. They're the people who listen carefully, open doors and ignite the fire within.

Working with a network of other mentors, allies and partners, you can drive global impact by helping us introduce more than 100 global women innovators to your local STEM ecosystem in Chicago or San Francisco through the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs' TechWomen program.

On the last day of the delegation, we sent a contingent of TechWomen fellows and mentors to meet with developers at Zypl.ai, learn about their groundbreaking services, and exchange insights on the latest trends and innovations in .

Fellow Mahina Usmonova led us through the event, which commenced with opening remarks from Sr. Machine Learning Engineer Dr. Akhlitdin Nizamitdinov.

This was followed by presentations from Zypl.Ai developers, who provided background information on the artificial intelligence lab, ideated at Stanford’s Startup Garage and accelerated by Google for Startups. Delegates learned about and offered feedback on Zypl.Ai's proprietary method of deploying AI models trained on synthetic data, which has allowed financial institutions to underwrite millions of loans to consumers with limited or no credit history.

After these illuminating talks, delegates convened a panel, “The Latest Trends in AI in Silicon Valley," featuring fellow Nodira Ibrogimova and mentors Abeetha Bala, Jill Finlayson, Subha Rajana and Sandy Chen, who served as moderator.

It was a compelling end to a week full of Techwomen impact and collaboration in Dushanbe, Tajikistan.

On the final afternoon of the delegation journey, fellows and mentors embarked on a site visit to Alif Bank, where we engaged with professional women in , sharing experiences and exploring how we can employ a growth mindset and lean on our superpowers to forge an upward career trajectory.

Fellow Najiba Farosatshoeva, a software engineer at Alif Bank, led us into the event, orienting us to the space and kicking off activities.

We next heard opening remarks from an Alif Bank Representative who enlightened us with insights into the bank's operations, milestones, and achievements.

Fellow Kamola Izzatulloeva, a project manager in the financial tech space, then took the floor to deliver her keynote speech, “How Women in Tech Can Overcome Fear and Get Promoted," during which she shared her personal story on overcoming fears and achieving career advancement through skills upleveling and a growth mindset.

She then passed the baton on to U.S. mentors Cora Lam and Maile Smith who led an engaging empowerment activity on discovering one's superpower and leveraging it for personal and professional growth.

"It was remarkable to witness the diverse and inclusive work environment at Alif Bank," shared fellow Amangul Orazova of Turkmenistan, noting the significant representation of female staff, particularly in the IT and development division.

We thank Alif Bank for welcoming us into their space for an insightful and empowering afternoon.

In the final day of the TechWomen Tajikistan delegation, we engaged with the National Academy of Science of Tajikistan’s (NAST) Women in Nuclear (WIN) group to hear presentations on their work across the science industry and exchange ideas for attracting more women to careers in science during our ‘Women in STEM Symposium.”

“The inclusion of young women is critical to ensure the sustainability of their involvement in STEM...and we need the support of [our] whole society – families, institutions, educational and government authorities,” urged opening speaker Zarina Sayfieva, President of the National Chapter of WIN Tajikistan and the Director of the Regional Training Center on WMD Nonproliferation at the Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Safety and Security Agency (CBRN SSA). She shared how WIN works toward its goals by collaborating with laboratories, factories, universities and governmental organizations to bring STEM-focused tours, trainings, competitions, conferences and lectures to students and women throughout the country.

The two organizations then took turns offering deeper insights into their work. We started with “Who are Women in Nuclear of Tajikistan,” presented by Gaybullaeva Zumrat Habibovna of WIN. She was followed by “Who are TechWomen,” presented by fellows Amangul Orazova and mentor Rebecca Biswas. Amangul delved into the machinations of the program, while Rebecca reflected on how involvement in TechWomen can add tremendous value to one’s professional and personal life.

"TechWomen provided me the chance to enhance my skills, knowledge, and network in the tech industry, leading to a greater sense of empowerment and readiness for my career journey ahead,” added Fellow Furug Rasuli.

Attendees then engaged in small group networking before mentor Laura Messerschmit took the floor to offer closing remarks, underscoring the value of strengthening connections among women in STEM and offering information on how to apply for TechWomen.
