I had an excellent time presenting a historical lecture for California No. 1 and Seven Hills No. 881 last week. Both lodges showed me outstanding hospitality during my visit and an incredible enthusiasm for the material. I look forward to visiting again soon!

This year's presentations are special for me as most lodges rarely get the president of the Philalethes Society, the editor of Heredom, and the Junior Warden of Quatuor Coronati all rolled into one person!

H/T to Sean Patrick Carter of Logos Lodge No. 861 for photographing me in action!

Tonight we held our annual Roll Call. It’s a event that may be unique to Cal Lodge No 1 we read the roll. That’s where we start with the newest Master Main in the room and finish working the oldest. Your age is thd time since you were raised. A fine event. We also honor the members we have lost in the preceding year.

California Lodge #1
SEPTEMBER TRESTLEBOARD
A MESSAGE FROM THE EAST
Brethren,
As we now wind toward the final quarter of the year, three events of note come to mind: our annual roll call, the celebration of our 175th anniversary, and our yearly installation.
This year’s roll call will be held at Basque Cultural Center on Tuesday, Oct 10, 5:00p-10:00p with all Master Masons in good standing encouraged to attend. An electronic invitation to rsvp has already been sent out, which also includes within it a detailed outline of the menu from which your selection is imperative to properly secure our booking. If you haven’t so already, I encourage you to make that rsvp, secure that date, and come break bread among brothers and fellows. It is personally one of my greatest joys to witness the genuine recoupled obligatory salutation from brothers of whom time and distance has caused estrangement, listen to the merriment and riotous laughter of shared conversation of days past and present, and reflect upon our numerous blessings of opportuning a bigger brighter day.
And what a day it will be when we get a chance to recognize the cumulative efforts, trials, and progress of California Lodge 1 during our celebration of its 175th year of existence! As always, we are incredibly fortunate to drink in the passionate energies of WB John Bermudez, who has been tasked to chair this most auspicious day along with WB Ed Lim and MW Frank Loui. Lake Merced Golf Club on Saturday, Nov 11, 5:00p-10:00p will bear witness to the recognition of our storied history as well as administrating thoughtful, deliberate ruminations of our shaping the future. With the majority of the planning having already hatched, meetings to finalize how best to dot every “I” and cross every “T” will hopefully reflect the vigor, endurance, and vitality of the soul of California Lodge 1. We implore you, as members, the join us in this celebration. Once the price and detailed menu is consummated, our members will obviously have 1st priority in reserving a spot – with a 2nd round of invitation to be selectively extended subsequently.
Purposeful selection of our lodge officers, those tasked with setting the tone, direction, and decisions, can often be a challenge, with this year being no exception. With utmost apologies to our members, I must confess I was unable to secure two future stewards for the upcoming Masonic year at the moment. My goal of ensuring we impart upon all Entered Apprentices and Fellowcrafts the traditional form of proficiency has both been a worthwhile goal, but also forces gradual deliberate pacing. Fortunately, support from our members stepping up, volunteering their time, efforts, and abilities have been such a welcomed demonstration of charitable actions to assist when in need, and my expressed gratitude to those members’ endorsement of fulfilling our present and future undertakings.
Let us continue to progress in harmony! Regards,
Jonathan Chan Worshipful Master

7 Rules of Masonry
1. LET IT GO...
Make peace with your past so it won’t screw up your present
2. IGNORE THEM..
What others think of you is none of
your business
3. GIVE IT TIME
Time heals almost everything
4. DON’T COMPARE
You have no idea what others’ journey is all about
5. NEVER GIVE UP
It always seems impossible until it’s done
6. IT’S ON YOU
Only you are in charge of your happiness
7. SMILE
Life is short. Enjoy it while you have it.
