On Saturday, CYN's Board Members and Staff volunteered their time to show their support at the 31st Annual Mae Louise Mays City Wide Softball Event!

City Youth Now was the leading fiscal agency for this year's event, put together in collaboration with HSA staff, Recs & Park staff, and our Executive Director. For months, the planning committee came together and organized, outreached, and volunteered their time to make this event a success! Way to go, team!

Wow! What a wonderful night of celebration and community. Thank you to everyone who joined us and shout out to those who supported from afar - our 74th Rise Awards was a huge success. It is always meaningful to be able to gather together in an effort towards a shared vision and mission. Special thank you to our courageous and impressive youth scholarship recipients for inspiring us with their journeys, dreams and ambitions, and for allowing us to honor and support them along the way!

This beautiful evening - of music, great food and drink, awards and moving speeches, an exciting raffle, and the best company - couldn’t have been possible without our community partners, supporters, sponsors, donors, Board of Directors, Young Professionals Board, staff, volunteers, and youth! Thank you for being here with us.

🎉 Please join us in congratulating our 2024 Scholarship Recipients! We had over 15 impressive applicants this year. Our scholarship committee was moved and inspired by the achievements and aspirations of all the youth who applied. We will be celebrating these five recipients at our Annual Rise Awards this May 23rd! 🌟Tickets are still available 🎟️

This year, the S.T.E.P.S. Program was able to contribute 11 mini scholarships as well! 👏🏽

Thank you to our donors, sponsors, partners and supporters for helping make these scholarships possible! Last night, our cooking class with culminated in the most wonderful garden party! We made pizzas and macaroons and got to bond over over both the process and the shared meal.

Thank you again so much to Vanessa and her team for hosting us and making the classes so warm, informative, accessible and fun! Over the course of four sessions, youth got to learn how to make tacos (and tortillas from scratch), stir fry, galettes, pizza, macaroons and more! Making food and sharing it is an art and a joy, and when done mindfully, helps keep us and our planet happy and healthy!

This class series, focused on nutrition and supporting youth access to healthy food during school breaks, was made possible by the funding we received from the participatory budget project by District 7! 🍎🍅🍋🥑🥦🥬🫑🌽🥕🧄🧅

Thank you also to our awesome USF interns, Olivia and Emily, to our long time partner, John, and to our great board members, Tyrone and Ian, for coming out to support and bringing the party!

Our 2024 Rise Awards is right around the corner 😊

In addition to awarding scholarships and hearing from the youth we partner with, we also present the City Youth Now Community Service Award. This award is presented to one individual within our community that has consistently demonstrated compassion, commitment and service to youth with experience in the foster and/or juvenile justice system. It brings us great pleasure to share that this year’s award will be presented to social worker Monica Ternullo! 🥹 If you’ve ever had the pleasure of working with Monica, you know that her genuine care and commitment to youth experiencing the foster care system is unmatched. Monica’s dedication and determination shines through in all that she does. It is an honor to be able to celebrate her and all the ways she helps young people reach stability, personal growth and long term success.

Can you list all 7 principles of Kwanzaa?

The “Nguzo Saba” or as it translates from Swahili to English, “The Seven Principles of Kwanzaa,” is a value system and set of principles which outline the mission statement and intentions of Kwanzaa. From December 26 to January 1, a different principle is celebrated each day, highlighting African-centered themes and traditions.

The Nguzo Saba are listed as:

🔴 Umoja (Unity)
⚫ Kujichagulia (Self-Determination)
🟢 Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility)
🔴 Ujamaa (Cooperative economics)
⚫ Nia (purpose)
🟢 Kuumba (creativity)
🔴 Imani (faith)

During Kwanzaa someone will informally ask, “Habari Gani?” or “What's happening?” in Swahili throughout the day. Someone will respond with the principle for the day, which today is “Umoja” which translates into English as “Unity”.

To learn more about Kwanzaa’s history, cultural expressions, and to find fun activities for new families & children, as well as more information on the 7 principles, join our virtual Kwanzaa celebration: nmaahc.si.edu/kwanzaa
