Textile Arts Council
The Textile Arts Council is a support group dedicated to advancing appreciation for the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco’s textile arts collection.
The Victoria and Albert Museum, London, hosts ‘Hazara Dress and Embroidery from Afghanistan’ until 24 July 2025. The exhibition highlights the skills of Hazara textile artists, and celebrates the sense of community they find through dressmaking and embroidery.
In HALI 221, Fuchsia Hart introduces their culture and explores the features of their textiles, which you can access via the link in our bio.

For , we are delighted to share this Bengali textile depicting three mustachioed men in feathered caps and brightly colored clothes. What do you think they’re up to?
This textile is an example of “kantha” — a centuries-old Bengali tradition of embroidering and stitching patchwork cloth assembled from recycled rags. What a lovely and imaginative example of sustainability!

French designer Olivier Rousteing grew up watching American cowboy movies. His collaboration on costumes for the Black American cowboy movie “The Harder They Fall” (2021) inspired a capsule collection for Balmain that marries Rousteing’s luxe aesthetic with Old West details. It also acts as a corrective. Earlier Westerns, “with their all-white casts, ignored an incredible history, where ...[a quarter] of American cowboys were black—many of them newly freed slaves.” He states, “I was really pleased to work on this project so that the next generation, when they start watching Westerns, they will find a different point of view.”
These looks are currently on view in “Africa’s Fashion Diaspora” through December 29, 2024.
