When the Air Quality Index (AQI) indicates unhealthy levels of ozone, or smog pollution, here are some simple steps to minimize your exposure:
• Choose less strenuous activities. Exercising outdoors means breathing at a rapid rate, taking in more air and pollution.
• Consider rescheduling activities for the morning or another day when air pollution levels are lower.
• Move activities indoors, where ozone levels are typically lower.
Stay safe and breathe easier!
Say goodbye to dating apps and hello to public transit! Could the love of your life be on that next train, bus, or ferry ride with you?
Fed up with the traffic jams and angry drivers? Help put the brakes on congestion!
Help reduce traffic and make our roads and air clearer by using public transit, biking, or walking. Opting for buses, trains, or the ferry when possible can give you back some personal time for tasks while cutting down on emissions.
Alternatively, enjoying a leisurely stroll or bike ride can be good for your health and supports clean air simultaneously.
For World Environment Day, we're focusing on the air in our community. Clean air efforts start right where we live, work, and play.
There are many small actions you can take to improve air quality. Whether it's carpooling, using public transit, biking, or simply reducing energy consumption at home, every effort counts. Everyone doing their part can go a long way in helping us all breathe easier in the Bay Area.
Summer brings longer days and warmer weather as well as the potential for more air pollution, particularly smog.
Smog forms when pollutants from vehicles, industrial facilities, and other sources react with sunlight and heat to create ground-level ozone, a major component of smog.
Smog can harm our health by irritating the respiratory system. Those most vulnerable to ozone exposure include individuals with asthma, children, older adults, and those who spend a lot of time outdoors, particularly outdoor workers.
But there's good news! By making small changes in our daily routines like carpooling, taking transit, and avoiding unnecessary vehicle idling, we can all play a part in reducing summer smog and protecting our air quality.
Increasing temperatures and changing rainfall patterns extend the allergy season, creating longer and more intense counts and allergies. Visit AirNow.gov to find tools and tips to keep kids healthy during bad air quality days.
