Awake DBT had the honor and pleasure of kicking off San Jose Spotlight hosted by Bay Area Clinical Associates! We presented on the effectiveness of standard DBT with Prolonged Exposure therapy. What a fabulous bunch!

As we jump frantically from one activity to another, we develop an aching sense of missing out on our lives. The remedy is to pay full attention, even in short interludes, many times a day. As a venerable old Tibetan lama said to me high up in the Himalayas, “Short moments, many times.”

• Nourish yourself! Eat a meal mindfully, noticing the colors, the flavors, the texture of what you are eating.

• Throughout the day, experiment with walking mindfully as you go from place to place. Try not to multitask, and instead allow the walking to be a means to reset and gather yourself. Feel your feet against the ground and the sense of your body moving through space. No texting or phone calls!

• Unitask by focusing on just one activity for a small portion of time, settling your attention on which touch sensation is most predominant. Perhaps the feeling of your feet against the floor, or something you are holding or transporting.

There's this misconception that if we allow sadness or grief then it will consume us and never leave.
This is far from truth. The more accepting and loving you are of your emotional pain, the sooner you realize vou are more in control than vou think. Emotions are temporary when they are truly welcomed. And just like any owner of space, you have the power of asking them to leave. So go ahead and ride that wave! 🌊

The holidays can bring up a wide range of emotions for people, so for , we would like to take a few moments to practice mindfulness of emotions!

As the beginning of the holiday season approaches, take a moment to observe the emotions coming up for you. If you notice sadness, anger, or loneliness show up during this practice, simply observe the emotion coming and going. Notice where in your body you are feeling the emotions, and how long it takes for the emotion to go down. Practice acceptance for the emotions as they are.
