👁️ Citizens, heed the call of Big Brother! 📢 We command your attention to the upcoming theatrical production of “1984,” meticulously adapted from George Orwell’s seminal novel by our loyal followers Robert Owens, Wilton Hall Jr., and William A. Miles.

🎭 Under the watchful gaze of Director Scott Cummins, our esteemed Theatre Arts Lecturer, watch the unfolding drama at the Hammer Theatre.

📆 Prepare for the performances on:
May 3, 9, 10 at 7:30 pm
May 4, 11 at 2 pm
May 8 at 11 am

🔒 Enter the world of Oceania, where the all-seeing eye of Big Brother reigns supreme. Join us as we expose the treacherous journey of Winston Smith, trapped in the machinations of the state. Experience the chilling consequences of rebellion in a society where dissent is crushed and conformity is the law.

🌐 This production is not merely entertainment; it is a stark warning of the dangers that lurk in our world. Let the truth be known: resistance is futile and thoughtcrime will not be tolerated.

🎟️ Secure your place and bear witness to the power of conformity, surveillance, and the grip of authority by using the link in our bio.

🫵 Your compliance is expected.

Join us in celebrating imagination, art, and movement with the first ever SJSU Stop Motion Animation festival. Our festival will kick off with a series of hands-on workshops focusing on different areas of stop motion animation productions: puppetry, fabrication techniques, miniature sets and props, character development and of course, animation and storytelling. The workshops will be followed by a weekend of screenings, panels and Q&As at the Hammer Theatre.

Stop Motion Animation entails photographing your object or figure, slightly moving them, and photographing them again. When the photos are played in succession, the objects or characters appear to be moving on their own. Interdisciplinary by nature, this fascinating art form encompasses several areas—bringing them together to create thought provoking magic.

Workshops, Special Programming, and Feature Film screening with Academy-nominated Director Jim Capobianco on March 2nd at SJSU (registration required!)

Screenings, Panel, Kangmin Kim retrospective and Q&A at the Hammer Theatre on March 3rd at 2pm.

You’ve probably never considered comics as something that can be used for activism, but during the comics workshop and public conversation held on November 1st and 2nd, students were able to see how it could be. By creating their own comics, students were able to share their personal stories and express themselves. This, in itself, can be seen as a form of activism. As Assistant Professor Urcaregui says, “We need diverse stories, not only autobiographical, but also fantasy. To not only see ourselves reflected, but to see experiences beyond our own.” Find out more about this in the new Expressions edition here: https://buff.ly/3Br8g4b!

As one student performer puts it, “There’s no character that’s an antagonist. Ambition is the antagonist of the play.” In the workplace culture, ambition is everywhere. You can’t escape it. This feature story about Gloria is a cautionary tale that becomes a reminder of the consequences of being too ambitious. Read more to discover an in-depth look of Gloria, now available in the College of H&A's Expressions newsletter for the Fall 2023 edition. Read Expressions here: https://buff.ly/3Br8g4b

We're at our last week of our crowdfunding campaign for the Digital Humanities Center and have raised over 80% of our goal! Please consider making a gift today, which will be matched 1:1 by the NEH.

We've described how the DHC might change how we as a community can interact with the humanities and the arts, but the Center can also change how we interact with one another. Conversations about concerning issues can include more people and activists can spread their message more widely.
