10 Tips to stimulate “connection,” with your child.

Feeling lost for words, in attempt to communicate and talk with your child, when you see your child shutting down, before you. You feel helpless. As a parent, you have tried many approaches and nothing seems to work. You have heard these words before, “kids don’t listen!” or “they tune you out!”

1. Think about the setting (environment) that will help you become creative. Changing the setting from what your child is accustomed to seeing is one way of reaching out to your child. You create the distraction, by appealing to your child’s senses (sight, hearing, smell, taste, the mind, and touch).
2. Food is a great distraction. Especially if it is a home cooked meal. Remember, do not over do it! Keep it simple.
3. Attempt to enter into their world. Not through the electronics.
4. Keep your expectations to a minimum.
5. Establish boundaries. Present to your child an evite-card (something you made) to attend breakfast, lunch, or dinner in your kitchen. Inform your child of the attire expected for the meal. Also limit: no phones during mealtime. This includes the parent’s phone too.
6. Your goal is to “create a connection,” only.
7. Sit with your child, to enjoy this beautiful home cooked meal.
8. Be patient, but be consistent with the simple home cooked meals, with minimum distractions.
9. Creative talk ideas: about the home cooked meal, world events that will generate interest, school expectations, future vacations, chores, or almost any topic that is not directed at the problem. Yet!
10. Practice talking and listening. Do not limit yourself to these home cooked meals for the future.
