BAY EMT

Bay Area Youth EMT Program was created in 2002. BAY EMT became necessary after it was noted that many fire departments and EMS agencies have trouble recruiting candidates from under-represented ethnic and gender groups. Many of these agencies now require candidates to have an EMT certificate, Paramedic license or some form of fire training. Our goal is to provide a positive learning environment that creates civic-minded EMTs, with an emphasis on community service. The program is offered at no cost to the students. All texts, supplies and equipment are donated or purchased by sponsors of the program. The classes are held two nights a week from 6:00pm to 10:00pm, and on one Sunday each month. A new session begins every January and July. Along with learning the EMT curriculum, the students are given lessons on civic duty. The first responder and health care profession is more than driving with lights and sirens and saving lives. We focus on building conscious citizens who will participate in community service and become change agents in thier neighborhoods. BAY EMT provides CPR training and blood pressure screenings for community organizations and churches. Students are required to volunteer at health fairs and community events, which are scheduled through collaborations with the BAY EMT program. Prior to the start of each session an orientation is held for prospective students and their parents. The orientation is mandatory for admission into the program. BAY EMT accepts a total of 40 students per session. The BAY EMT Program admits students of any race, national origin and ethnic origin to all rights, privileges, programs and activities made available to students of the program. It does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin or ethnic origin in admission policies or scholarships.
