San Leandro Nostalgia: The Oakland Speedway - this race track was located where Bayfair Mall is now. It was razed in the 1950s to allow for Macy's to build their department store there which then grew into an open-air shopping mall, and in the 1980s and 1990s it was enclosed to be what it is today.

San Leandro Nostalgia: The San Leandro Masonic Lodge on E. 14th Street at W. Joaquin. In the distance, you can see Estudillo House, which was a fancy hotel and restaurant built in 1855 and operated for ca 75 years. Today, the Masonic Lodge is still standing, but Estudillo House has been the site of multiple public and commercial buildings (Town Hall Square) and is currently the site of an upcoming 180-unit residential project

San Leandro Secures $9.3 Million Grant to Convert Motel into Interim Homeless Shelter

San Leandro, CA: Governor Gavin Newsom has awarded the City of San Leandro $9.3 million to transform the Nimitz Motel into an interim homeless shelter and navigation center. The City will operate the shelter for five years before converting it into permanent supportive rental housing for homeless and at-risk families. The City of San Leandro is exploring a variety of local housing protections such as rent stabilization ordinance, rent registry, just cause, and tenant anti-harassment regulations and is requesting community input. A community meeting will be held on Tuesday, October 10th from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. via Zoom to gather insights and perspectives from residents, renters, and landlords that will help the City Council and City staff tailor the design of any new protections to align with community priorities. The City Housing Division will present feedback gathered from the community and seek direction at a Special City Council Rules Committee meeting tentatively scheduled for Thursday, November 9, 2023, at 9 a.m. in the Surlene G. Grant Community Room. Online Community Meeting on Tuesday, October 10, 2023, from 6:30 p.m.- 8:30 p.m. on Zoom.
