It’s National Breastfeeding Month and I’ve been thinking about the most rad things that BreastfeedLA has done this year. Next week we have a Know Your Rights two day advocacy training in LA and thanks to other rad folks like Tanya Reyes, we were able to coordinate pregnant and parenting LAUSD students to be bussed to the training. And one former student who will be presenting on a panel who had to fight for her right to lactation accommodations at In-N-Out. We have done a lot of rad stuff this year but having these students at this training is literally in my top five highlights of the year. We provided scholarships for all of these students to attend even though we did not have funding for it because we know how important it is that they receive this education. If you feel called to support efforts like this, please consider a donation to BFLA. Even a few dollars goes a long way.

Hi All,
I’m meeting with OCHCA on Thursday and LACDPH tomorrow to talk about the formula shortage and would like to hear from local parents about what you are seeing and what kind of support you need. An example would be if you are seeing hoarding of formula, or stores that are empty, or no issue at all, and support might look like increased accessible and free lactation support, more variety of formula at WIC, a list of places to go for formula in emergencies, etc. Please let me know what you are seeing and what you need. Thank you!

In December 2020, Yamaguchi was 36 weeks pregnant when she was diagnosed with Covid-19 and Maren was delivered by C-section, though she wouldn’t meet her for another five months.
Pregnant with COVID, she survived a nightmare When Amy Yamaguchi awoke after a lung transplant surgery, she had trouble with her memory. She didn’t know she was married or that she had a baby.
sometimes I wonder
if mary breastfed jesus
if she cried out when he bit her
or if she sobbed when he would not latch
and sometimes I wonder
if this is all too vulgar
to ask in a church
full of men
without milk stains on their shirts
or coconut oil on their breasts
preaching from pulpits off limits to the mother of god
but then i think of feeding jesus
birthing jesus
the expulsion of blood
and smell of sweat
the salt of a mother’s tears
onto the soft head of the salt of the earth
feeling lonely
and tired
hungry
annoyed
overwhelmed
loving
and i think
if the vulgarity of birth is not
honestly preached
by men who carry power but not burden
who carry privilege but not labor
who carry authority but not submission
then it should not be preached at all
because the real scandal of the birth of god
lies in the cracked ni***es of a
14 year old
and not in the sermons of ministers
who say women
are too delicate
to lead

Most working Californians pay for Paid Family Leave benefits, but many could lose their job or be demoted for using them. All workers’ jobs should be protected when they need time off to bond with a new child or care for a seriously ill member.
Thank you Governor Newsom and the Legislature for your efforts thus far and we urge you to continue prioritizing PFL job protections in the final 2020-21 Budget. Our families and communities will be stronger for it.
